Exploration & World Navigation
Yakuza 5 offers an expansive world spread across five distinct cities, each with its own unique flavor and opportunities. Mastering exploration and navigation is key to uncovering all the game has to offer, from hidden items and substories to crucial mission objectives.
Understanding Your Map
Your primary tool for navigation is the in-game map, accessible via the pause menu (Options/Start button) or by pressing the Touchpad (PS4) / Select button (PS3). The map displays your current location, key landmarks, mission objectives, and various points of interest.
- Player Icon: A blue arrow indicates your current position and facing direction.
- Mission Markers: Main story objectives are typically marked with a red circle or a character icon. Substories appear as question marks (?).
- Points of Interest: Icons denote various establishments:
- Restaurants/Bars: Fork and knife icon. Essential for healing and building Heat.
- Convenience Stores (Poppo/M Store): Shopping cart icon. Purchase healing items, food, and various consumables.
- Arcades (Club SEGA): Game controller icon. Enjoy mini-games and win prizes.
- Taxis: Taxi icon. Fast travel points.
- Save Points: Payphone icon. Crucial for saving your progress.
- Weapon Shops: Katana icon. Buy and sell weapons.
- Locker Keys: Small key icon. Indicates a nearby locker key.
- Zoom Levels: Use the right analog stick to zoom in and out, providing both a detailed street view and a broader district overview.
Efficient Travel Methods
While walking the streets is part of the charm, knowing how to get around efficiently will save you time and potential street brawls.
- On Foot: The most common method. Explore every nook and cranny. Keep an eye out for glowing items on the ground – these are often valuable consumables or Locker Keys.
- Running: Hold R2/RT to sprint. This is faster but can attract more attention from aggressive thugs.
- Taxis: Your primary fast travel option.
- Locate a taxi stand (marked with a taxi icon on your map).
- Approach the taxi and press X/A to interact.
- Select your desired destination from the list of unlocked taxi stands or specific story locations.
- Cost: Taxis incur a small fee, typically between 500-1000 Yen depending on the distance.
- Unlocking Destinations: New taxi stands and inter-city travel options become available as you progress through the story and visit new areas.
- Inter-City Travel: To travel between the five main cities (Kamurocho, Sotenbori, Nagasugai, Tsukimino, Kineicho), you'll need to use specific transportation hubs. These are usually marked on your map after they become accessible during the main story. For example, in Kamurocho, you'll use the airport or bus terminal.
Environmental Interaction & Item Discovery
The world of Yakuza 5 is rich with interactive elements. Don't just rush through; take your time to observe and interact.
- Vending Machines: Scattered throughout each city, these offer a quick way to purchase drinks that restore health or boost stats. Keep an eye out for rare or limited-time offerings.
- Locker Keys: These small, shimmering items are often found in obscure corners, behind buildings, or on ledges. Each key corresponds to a locker at the local Locker Coin Exchange (usually near a taxi stand or major street). Collecting all keys in a district and opening their respective lockers can yield valuable items, equipment, or even rare crafting materials.
- Hidden Items: Beyond locker keys, various consumables and crafting components can be found sparkling on the ground. Always check alleys, rooftops (if accessible), and behind obstacles.
- Breakable Objects: Many environmental objects like signs, bicycles, or traffic cones can be picked up and used as weapons during combat. Others, like cardboard boxes, can be broken to reveal items.
- Substory Triggers: Some substories are triggered simply by walking past a specific NPC or location, while others require you to interact with a particular object or enter a specific building. Keep an eye on your mini-map for the "!" icon indicating a potential substory.
Minimizing Encounters
While combat is a core part of Yakuza 5, sometimes you just want to get to your destination without interruption. Here are some tips:
- Stick to Sidewalks: Running in the middle of the street often draws more attention from groups of thugs.
- Observe Enemy Patrols: Most enemy groups have predictable patrol routes. Time your movements to avoid their line of sight.
- Use Disguises (Kiryu's Taxi Driver Segment): During Kiryu's section, driving the taxi allows you to avoid street encounters entirely while on duty.
- use the "Sneak" Ability (Akiyama's Section): Akiyama has a unique ability to sometimes avoid detection by certain enemy types, though this is less about world navigation and more about specific combat avoidance.
