Story Progression & Chapter Structure
Yakuza 5's narrative is a sprawling epic, divided into four distinct parts, each focusing on a different protagonist, culminating in a dramatic final act. Understanding this structure is key to maximizing your enjoyment and efficiency. Each part is further broken down into chapters, typically ranging from 3 to 5, with a final chapter often serving as a climactic conclusion for that character's arc before transitioning to the next.
General Progression Flow
Unlike previous Yakuza titles, Yakuza 5 requires players to complete each protagonist's entire story arc before moving on to the next. There's no jumping between characters freely until the very end of the game. This means dedicating yourself to one character's city, substories, and side content before the story forces a switch.
- Main Story Objectives: These are always marked on your map with a red icon. Following these will advance the plot.
- Substories: These side quests often appear as blue icons or are triggered by walking into specific areas. While not mandatory for story progression, they offer valuable experience, unique items, and deepen the world-building. We highly recommend tackling substories as they become available, especially for characters like Kiryu and Saejima, who benefit greatly from the extra XP and money.
- Another Drama: Each protagonist has a unique "Another Drama" storyline, a substantial side activity that often unlocks new abilities or provides significant rewards. These are usually introduced early in a character's part and can be pursued at your leisure, though some story beats might temporarily lock you out.
