Heat Actions & Special Moves
Heat Actions are the flashy, devastating finishers that define combat in Yakuza 5. Executing them correctly can turn the tide of a difficult fight, clear out multiple enemies, or simply provide a satisfying end to a brawl. Each of the five protagonists has a unique set of Heat Actions and special moves, often tied to their fighting style, environment, or specific conditions.
Understanding the Heat Gauge
Your Heat Gauge, displayed in the top-left corner of the screen, fills as you land attacks, successfully dodge, and take damage. Once a segment of the gauge is full (it typically has three segments, though some characters can expand this), you can perform a Heat Action. The color of the gauge indicates its level: blue, green, and orange/red for increasing intensity. Some Heat Actions require a higher Heat level to activate.
General Heat Action Strategies
- Environmental Awareness: Always look for glowing objects in the environment. These are prime candidates for environmental Heat Actions. Examples include bicycles, traffic cones, signposts, and even walls. Position an enemy near these objects and a prompt (usually Triangle) will appear.
- Grab & Throw: Many basic Heat Actions are initiated by grabbing an enemy (Circle) and then pressing Triangle. Experiment with different grab positions (front, back, downed) for varied results.
- Weaponry: Weapons found on the ground or purchased from stores (e.g., Bat, Knife, Pistol) often have unique Heat Actions. Equip a weapon, build Heat, and look for the Triangle prompt when near an enemy.
- Finishing Blows: Heat Actions are excellent for finishing off tough opponents or bosses, as they deal significant damage and often provide invincibility frames during the animation.
- Multiple Enemies: Some Heat Actions are designed to hit multiple foes, especially those involving environmental objects or specific character abilities. Use these to thin out crowds.
Character-Specific Heat Actions & Special Moves
Kazuma Kiryu (Dragon of Dojima Style)
Kiryu's Heat Actions are often brutal and direct, leveraging his raw power and traditional martial arts. He excels at using environmental objects.
- Essence of Wall Crush: Grab an enemy (Circle), drag them to a wall, and press Triangle. Requires at least one Heat segment.
- Essence of Extreme: When your Heat Gauge is full (red), press Triangle near a downed enemy. This is a powerful finisher.
- Essence of the Iron Fist: While holding a weapon like a Bat, press Triangle near an enemy. The specific animation changes based on the weapon.
- Essence of the Thug Killer: When an enemy is attacking, time a dodge (X) and then quickly press Triangle as they recover. This is a counter-attack Heat Action.
Taiga Saejima (Brawler Style)
Saejima's fighting style is slow but incredibly powerful. His Heat Actions often involve charging attacks or slamming enemies with immense force.
- Essence of the Beast: Charge a heavy attack (hold Triangle) until Saejima glows, then release near an enemy. Requires a moderate Heat level.
- Essence of the Avalanche: While holding an enemy, move to a railing or ledge and press Triangle. Saejima will throw them over.
- Essence of the Crushing Blow: When an enemy is stunned or against a wall, press Triangle. Saejima delivers a devastating punch.
- Essence of the Giant Swing: Grab a smaller enemy (Circle), spin them around, and press Triangle to throw them into other enemies.
Shun Akiyama (Akiyama Style)
Akiyama's style is fast and acrobatic, focusing on kicks and quick combos. His Heat Actions are often about stylish takedowns and rapid-fire attacks.
- Essence of the Cyclone: After a successful quickstep (X + direction), press Triangle near an enemy. Akiyama delivers a spinning kick.
- Essence of the Flash: When an enemy is on the ground, press Triangle. Akiyama performs a rapid series of stomps.
- Essence of the Triple Kick: During a combo, if an enemy is stunned, a Triangle prompt may appear for a powerful three-hit kick sequence.
- Essence of the Aerial Drive: While an enemy is airborne from a launcher attack, press Triangle to follow up with a mid-air assault.
Tatsuo Shinada (Shinada Style)
Shinada, a former baseball player, utilizes unconventional weapons and his unique fighting style. His Heat Actions are often improvised and impactful.
- Essence of the Batting Cage: While holding a Bat (or similar long weapon), press Triangle near an enemy. Shinada will wind up for a powerful swing.
- Essence of the Leg Lock: When an enemy is on the ground, press Triangle. Shinada applies a painful submission hold.
- Essence of the Diving Tackle: After a successful dodge, press Triangle to tackle an enemy to the ground.
- Essence of the Dropkick: From a slight distance, if an enemy is charging or vulnerable, press Triangle for a powerful dropkick.
Haruka Sawamura (Dance Battle Style)
Haruka's "combat" is unique, focusing on dance battles. Her "Heat Actions" are more akin to special performance moves that impress judges and deplete her opponent's "HP" (Audience Appeal).
- Special Appeal: During a dance battle, when your Tension Gauge is sufficiently high, press Triangle. This unleashes a powerful dance move that significantly boosts your appeal. The specific move depends on the type of dance battle (e.g., "Essence of the Twirl" for street dance, "Essence of the Idol" for stage performances).
- Finishing Move: When an opponent's appeal is low, a Triangle prompt will appear for a final, high-scoring move that often ends the battle.
- Audience Engagement: Successfully hitting prompts and performing well fills your Tension Gauge, which is Haruka's equivalent of the Heat Gauge.
Unlocking New Heat Actions
Many Heat Actions are learned through:
- Training with Masters: Each character has specific masters who can teach them new techniques. For example, Kiryu can learn from Komaki, Saejima from the Mountain Hermit, and Akiyama from the homeless man in Kamurocho.
- Revelation Events: Sometimes, observing specific events in the world (e.g., a street performer, a unique fight) will trigger a "Revelation" where your character gains inspiration for a new Heat Action. These usually involve taking a picture with your phone.
- Story Progression: Some powerful Heat Actions are unlocked automatically as you progress through the main story.
- Skill Upgrades: Investing experience points into your character's skill tree will unlock passive abilities and sometimes new Heat Actions. Access this via the "Skills" menu.
Mastering Heat Actions is crucial for efficient combat and enjoying the full spectacle of Yakuza 5's brawling system. Experiment with different situations and characters to discover all the devastating moves at your disposal!
