New Game+ & Post-Game Content

Congratulations, Dragon of Dojima! Completing the main story of Yakuza 5 is a monumental achievement, but the journey through Japan's underworld is far from over. New Game+ and the robust Post-Game content offer fresh challenges, opportunities to tie up loose ends, and a chance to truly master every facet of the game.

New Game+ (Premium Adventure)

Upon clearing the main story, you'll unlock the option to start a New Game+, also known as Premium Adventure. This mode allows you to replay the entire story from the beginning while carrying over significant progress from your completed save file. This is the ideal way to tackle higher difficulties, complete missed side quests, or simply re-experience the epic narrative with all your hard-earned power.

What Carries Over:

  • Character Levels & Stats: All five protagonists (Kazuma Kiryu, Taiga Saejima, Shun Akiyama, Tatsuo Shinada, and Haruka Sawamura) retain their experience levels, stat upgrades, and learned abilities.
  • Money: Your entire cash reserves will transfer, making early-game purchases and investments significantly easier.
  • Items & Equipment: All weapons, armor, accessories, healing items, and crafting materials in your inventory and storage will carry over. This includes powerful endgame gear like the Dragon God Amulet or the War God Talisman, which can make early boss fights trivial.
  • Completion List Progress: Any completed tasks on the Completion List (e.g., minigame achievements, food consumption, substories completed) will remain checked off. However, you'll need to re-complete specific story-gated tasks if you wish to achieve 100% in a single playthrough.
  • Revelations: All learned Revelation moves will be available from the start.
  • Climax Heat Moves: Any unlocked Climax Heat Moves will be retained.
  • Weapon Modding Progress: Any progress made with the weapon modding system will carry over.
  • Coliseum Ranks: Your current rank in the Coliseum will be retained, allowing you to jump back into high-level fights immediately.

What Does NOT Carry Over:

  • Story Progress: The main story will reset, requiring you to play through all chapters again.
  • Substory Progress: While completed substories are marked on your Completion List, you cannot re-do them in New Game+. Any *uncompleted* substories from your previous save will be available to start anew.
  • Friendship Levels: Relationships with various NPCs will reset.
  • Another Drama Progress: Each character's Another Drama (e.g., Kiryu's Taxi Driver, Saejima's Hunter, Haruka's Idol Career) will reset to the beginning. This provides an excellent opportunity to fully complete them if you rushed through on your first run.

Strategies for New Game+:

  1. Legend Difficulty: This is the primary reason many players engage with New Game+. With your powered-up characters and gear, Legend difficulty becomes a challenging but manageable experience. Be prepared for tougher enemies, increased damage, and more aggressive AI.
  2. 100% Completion: Use New Game+ to mop up any remaining Completion List items you missed. This includes:

    • All Substories: Ensure you complete every single substory for each character. Refer to our "Substories" section for detailed walkthroughs.
    • Minigame Master: Dedicate time to mastering all minigames, from batting cages to mahjong. Your carried-over money can be a huge asset for gambling minigames.
    • Food & Drink: Visit every restaurant and try every item on the menu.
    • Weapon Crafting: Collect all crafting materials and forge every weapon available.
  3. Another Drama Completion: Fully complete each character's Another Drama. For example, ensure Kiryu achieves the highest rank in his taxi business, Saejima hunts all legendary beasts, and Haruka becomes a top idol. These often unlock powerful abilities or items.
  4. Item Farming: With stronger characters, farming rare items from enemies or specific locations becomes much easier. Look for high-tier crafting materials or expensive sellable items.

Post-Game Content (Premium Adventure)

After completing the main story, you can also load your clear save file into Premium Adventure without starting a New Game+. This mode allows you to freely roam all cities with all five protagonists available from the start, essentially acting as a free-roam sandbox to complete any remaining content.

Accessing Characters in Premium Adventure:

In Premium Adventure, you can switch between the five protagonists at any time. To do so, visit any of the following locations and interact with the designated character:

  • Kazuma Kiryu: Taxi Office in Fukuoka (Nagashigawa)
  • Taiga Saejima: Saejima's Hideout in Sapporo (Tsukimino)
  • Shun Akiyama: Sky Finance Office in Tokyo (Kamurocho)
  • Tatsuo Shinada: Shinada's Apartment in Nagoya (Kineicho)
  • Haruka Sawamura: Dyna Chair Office in Osaka (Sotenbori)

Simply approach the character in their respective location and you'll be prompted to switch. This allows for seamless exploration and completion of character-specific tasks.

Key Post-Game Activities:

  1. Substory Cleanup: Any substories you missed during your initial playthrough can now be completed. Use our "Substories" guide to pinpoint their locations and requirements.
  2. Another Drama Completion: If you didn't fully complete a character's Another Drama during the main story, now is the time. Maxing these out often yields significant rewards and unlocks powerful skills.
  3. Coliseum Challenges: Head to the Coliseum in Purgatory (Kamurocho) to take on the most challenging tournaments. Aim for the highest ranks and defeat all opponents to earn unique items and large sums of money.
  4. Ultimate Challenges: These are a series of extremely difficult combat scenarios designed to test your mastery of each character's fighting style. Access them from the main menu under "Ultimate Challenges." Completing them all is a true mark of a Yakuza master.
  5. Completion List Grind: Work towards 100% completion of the Completion List. This includes:

    • Weapon & Gear Collection: Purchase or craft every weapon, armor, and accessory. Visit the various weapon shops and the Weapon Modding shop.
    • Food & Drink Connoisseur: Eat and drink every item from every restaurant and bar across all five cities.
    • Minigame Perfection: Achieve the highest scores or complete all challenges in every minigame. This includes bowling, batting, darts, karaoke, pachinko, mahjong, shogi, and more.
    • Heat Action Encyclopedia: Perform every single Heat Action in the game.
  6. Secret Bosses: While Yakuza 5 doesn't have a traditional "secret boss" in the same vein as some other entries, completing all Another Dramas and certain substory chains can lead to some of the toughest fights in the game. Be prepared for a serious challenge!
  7. Maxing Out All Characters: Continue to grind experience points and skill points to fully max out every character's stats and learn all their abilities. The Coliseum is an excellent place for this, as are random street encounters.

Whether you choose to dive into a New Game+ or simply explore the world in Premium Adventure, Yakuza 5 offers countless hours of additional content to enjoy after the credits roll. Good luck, and remember to always fight with honor!
