Combat System
Welcome, Dragon of Dojima, to the streets of Kamurocho and Onomichi! Yakuza 6: The Song of Life refines Kiryu's legendary fighting style, focusing on a more fluid, physics-driven brawling experience. Forget the multiple fighting styles of previous entries; here, Kiryu's singular, powerful style is all you need, augmented by dynamic environmental interactions and devastating Heat Actions.
Basic Combat Flow
Combat in Yakuza 6 is all about adapting to your surroundings and exploiting enemy weaknesses. Here's a breakdown of the core mechanics:
- Light Attacks (Square Button): Your primary method for initiating combos and dealing quick damage. String these together to build up your Heat Gauge.
- Heavy Attacks (Triangle Button): Slower but more powerful attacks, often used to finish combos, break enemy guards, or launch foes into the air.
- Grabs (Circle Button): Essential for controlling single enemies, setting up throws, or initiating specific Heat Actions. Be warned: stronger enemies can often counter or break out of grabs.
- Dodging (X Button): Your main defensive maneuver. Use it to evade incoming attacks, circle around opponents, or reposition yourself for a counter-attack. Mastering the dodge is crucial for minimizing damage, especially against bosses.
- Guard (L1 Button): Blocks most incoming attacks, reducing damage. However, it can be broken by heavy attacks or certain enemy techniques, leaving you vulnerable.
Heat Gauge and Heat Actions
The Heat Gauge is your key to unleashing Kiryu's most devastating abilities. It fills as you land attacks, successfully dodge, and take damage. Once a segment of the gauge is full, you can execute powerful Heat Actions.
Types of Heat Actions
- Environmental Heat Actions: These are context-sensitive and often the most satisfying. Look for glowing blue prompts (R2 Button) near objects like bicycles, traffic cones, street signs, or even walls. For example, near a bicycle, you might see a prompt for "Bicycle Crush," allowing Kiryu to smash it over an enemy's head. In a restaurant like Ringer Hut, you might find prompts to use tables or chairs.
- Grab Heat Actions: While grappling an enemy, you'll often see R2 prompts for various throws or slams. These are excellent for dealing significant damage to a single target.
- Finisher Heat Actions: After a specific combo string or when an enemy is stunned, a blue R2 prompt might appear, allowing you to execute a powerful finishing move.
- Weapon Heat Actions: If you're wielding a weapon (see "Weapons" below), certain attacks or situations will trigger unique Heat Actions that utilize the weapon for maximum impact.
Strategy Tip: Don't hoard your Heat! While it's tempting to save it for a "big moment," using Heat Actions frequently can clear out groups of enemies faster and keep you safer. The gauge refills quickly, especially if you're aggressive.
Extreme Heat Mode
When your Heat Gauge is full, press R2 to activate Extreme Heat Mode. In this state, Kiryu glows blue, his attacks become significantly more powerful, and he gains temporary invincibility frames during certain actions. This mode is excellent for turning the tide of a difficult fight or quickly dispatching a boss.
- Duration: Extreme Heat Mode lasts for a limited time, indicated by the depleting Heat Gauge.
- Special Attacks: While in Extreme Heat Mode, some of your regular attacks will be enhanced, and you can execute unique, powerful Heat Actions that are only available in this state.
- Finisher: As Extreme Heat Mode is about to end, you'll often get a final, incredibly powerful Heat Action prompt to finish off a weakened enemy or deal massive damage to a boss.
Weapons
While Kiryu is a master of unarmed combat, weapons found in the environment can provide a significant advantage. Look for glowing objects on the ground or in the hands of enemies. Press Circle to pick them up.
- Temporary Use: Most weapons have limited durability and will break after a few uses.
- Types of Weapons:
- Blunt Objects: Bicycles, traffic cones, signboards, chairs, tables. These are great for crowd control and stunning enemies.
- Sharp Objects: Knives, katanas, broken bottles. These deal high damage to single targets.
- Firearms: Pistols, shotguns. Less common, but incredibly powerful for quick damage bursts. Ammunition is usually very limited.
- Weapon Heat Actions: Many weapons have unique Heat Actions that can be performed when your Heat Gauge is sufficiently filled. For example, using a katana might allow for a "Blade Frenzy" Heat Action.
Skill Customization (Stat Growth)
As you progress, you'll earn experience points (EXP) in five categories: Strength, Agility, Spirit, Technique, and Charm. These EXP points are crucial for unlocking and upgrading Kiryu's abilities.
- Accessing Skills: Open your smartphone (Touchpad) and navigate to the "Skills" menu.
- Unlocking Abilities: Each skill requires a specific combination of EXP types. For instance, a powerful new combo might require 100 Strength EXP and 50 Technique EXP.
- Recommended Early Upgrades:
- Dash Attack: Essential for closing distances quickly and initiating combat.
- Guard Break: Allows you to more easily penetrate enemy defenses.
- Increased Heat Gauge: Lets you store more Heat for more frequent Heat Actions and longer Extreme Heat Modes.
- Health Upgrades: Prioritize these to increase your survivability, especially on higher difficulties.
- EXP Sources:
- Combat: The primary source. Experiment with different attacks and Heat Actions to maximize EXP gain.
- Mini-games: Many mini-games, like baseball or karaoke, offer significant EXP rewards.
- Food and Drink: Eating at restaurants like Ringer Hut or Sushi Gin, or drinking at bars like Snack Gaudi, can provide temporary EXP boosts or direct EXP gains. Look for dishes with green icons indicating EXP bonuses.
- Sub-stories: Completing side quests often yields substantial EXP across multiple categories.
Advanced Combat Tips
- Targeting (R3 Button): Lock onto specific enemies to maintain focus, especially useful in crowded fights or against agile opponents.
- Throwing Enemies: After a grab (Circle), you can throw enemies into other opponents or environmental hazards for extra damage and crowd control.
- Wall Bounces: Throwing an enemy into a wall often stuns them, leaving them open for follow-up attacks or Heat Actions.
- Recovery: If knocked down, quickly press X to perform a quick recovery roll, minimizing the time you're vulnerable on the ground.
- Heal Items: Always carry a stock of healing items like Staminan X or Toughness Z. These can be purchased at convenience stores like Poppo or Don Quijote. Assign them to your quick-use slots for easy access during combat.
- Understand Enemy Types:
- Grinders: Basic thugs, easily dispatched.
- Guarders: Often block frequently; use heavy attacks or grab them.
- Rushers: Fast and aggressive; focus on dodging and counter-attacking.
- Heavyweights: Slow but powerful; their attacks can't be interrupted easily. Use hit-and-run tactics.
By mastering these techniques and continuously upgrading Kiryu's abilities, you'll be well-equipped to face any challenge the criminal underworld throws at you in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.
