Game Modes
Beyond the gripping main narrative of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Kamurocho and Onomichi offer a plethora of engaging activities and game modes to dive into. These modes provide opportunities for character development, earning valuable resources, and simply enjoying the rich world the game presents. Mastering these can significantly enhance your Kiryu experience.
Story Mode
This is the core experience of Yakuza 6, following Kazuma Kiryu's journey to uncover the truth behind Haruka's accident and the mystery surrounding her son, Haruto. The Story Mode is divided into chapters, each advancing the main plot and introducing new characters and locations.
- Progression: Follow the main objective markers on your map (typically red or yellow icons). Completing story missions often unlocks new substories, mini-games, and areas.
- Difficulty: You can select your difficulty at the start of a new game. If you find yourself struggling, consider grinding experience in mini-games or substories to boost Kiryu's stats.
- Key Items: Pay attention to items received during story progression. For example, the Smartphone is essential for accessing the in-game menu, substories, and the Troublr app. The Camera App, unlocked early in Kamurocho, is crucial for certain substories and finding hidden cats.
- Saving: Save frequently at phone booths scattered throughout Kamurocho and Onomichi. Don't rely solely on auto-saves, especially before major boss fights.
Premium Adventure
Unlocked after completing the main story, Premium Adventure allows you to continue exploring Kamurocho and Onomichi with all your earned skills, items, and money. There are no story missions in this mode, making it ideal for completing any missed substories, mini-games, or challenges.
- Access: Select "Premium Adventure" from the main menu after clearing the game.
- Benefits:
- Substory Completion: Tackle any substories you missed during the main game. Many offer unique rewards like powerful gear or new mini-game unlocks.
- Mini-Game Mastery: Dedicate time to achieving high scores in mini-games like Spearfishing, Clan Creator, or the Batting Cages without the pressure of story progression.
- Character Development: Continue to earn experience and upgrade Kiryu's stats to max out his abilities. This is also a great way to farm money for expensive equipment.
- Trophy/Achievement Hunting: Many trophies and achievements require extensive playtime in various side activities, making Premium Adventure the perfect sandbox.
- Important Note: While you retain your progress, certain story-specific areas or interactions might not be available in Premium Adventure.
New Game+
New Game+ is another option available after completing the main story. This mode allows you to restart the story from the beginning while carrying over most of your progress from your previous playthrough.
- Access: Select "New Game+" from the main menu after clearing the game.
- Carried Over Progress:
- Experience and Skills: All earned experience points and unlocked skills for Kiryu.
- Money: Your current Yen balance.
- Items: Most inventory items, including weapons, armor, and consumables.
- Completion Data: Progress in mini-games, substories (though you'll need to re-do them for story purposes), and character relationships.
- Reset Progress:
- Story Progress: The main story will restart from Chapter 1.
- Substory Status: While your completion data is carried over, you'll need to re-trigger and complete substories again if you wish to experience them within the new playthrough.
- Strategy: New Game+ is excellent for players who want to experience the story again on a higher difficulty, or for those who want to quickly power through the early game with an overpowered Kiryu to focus on specific challenges or achievements.
Clan Creator
The Clan Creator is a real-time strategy mini-game introduced early in the story. Kiryu leads a gang of loyal followers against various rival gangs, culminating in large-scale street brawls.
- Unlocking: The Clan Creator is unlocked during Chapter 5 in Onomichi, after Kiryu encounters Joe the Bartender at the La Pente bar.
- Gameplay:
- Recruitment: Recruit new gang members by completing substories, finding them in the world, or through special events. Each member has unique stats and a special ability.
- Missions: Engage in various missions, from defending territory to attacking rival strongholds. Missions are accessed via the Clan Creator app on Kiryu's smartphone.
- Leader Skills: Kiryu can use powerful Leader Skills during battles, such as "Heat Action: Rush" or "Heal: All Allies," which can turn the tide of a fight. These skills consume a Heat Gauge that builds during battle.
- Rewards: Completing Clan Creator missions earns you experience for your gang members, money, and sometimes unique equipment or items.
- Strategy:
- Balanced Team: Aim for a balanced team with a mix of melee, ranged, and support units. Pay attention to their cost and deployment limits.
- Upgrade Leaders: Focus on upgrading the stats of your key leaders (e.g., Nagumo, Yuta, Tagashira) as they are often more powerful than generic recruits.
- Exploit Weaknesses: Some enemy units are weak to specific attack types. Adjust your deployment strategy accordingly.
- Ultimate Battles: After completing the main Clan Creator storyline, challenging "Ultimate Battles" become available, offering significant rewards but requiring a highly optimized team.
- Notable Rewards: Successfully completing the Clan Creator storyline and its ultimate battles can yield the powerful Dragon God Amulet, which significantly boosts Kiryu's attack.
