General Tips & Tricks
Welcome, Dragon of Dojima! Whether you're a seasoned veteran of Kamurocho's streets or a newcomer to Kiryu's world, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life offers a rich experience with plenty of nuances. This section provides detailed, actionable advice to help you navigate the game's challenges, maximize your efficiency, and uncover all of its secrets.
Combat Mastery
Kiryu's fighting style is as robust as ever, but understanding its intricacies is key to dominating every encounter.
- Heat Actions are Your Best Friend: Don't hoard your Heat Gauge! Heat Actions deal massive damage, often finish off multiple enemies, and provide valuable invincibility frames. Look for environmental Heat Actions, such as slamming an enemy into a pole or using a bicycle, as these are particularly devastating.
- Utilize Extreme Heat Mode: Once your Heat Gauge is full, activate Extreme Heat Mode (R2/RT). This transforms Kiryu into an unstoppable force, increasing his damage, speed, and granting access to unique finishers. It's especially useful against bosses or large groups of tough enemies. Remember to manage its duration, as it drains over time.
- Grab and Throw: Grabbing enemies (Circle/B) and throwing them (Circle/B again) is an excellent crowd-control tactic. It creates openings, separates dangerous foes, and can even deal damage if they collide with other enemies or objects. Upgrade your grab-related skills early on.
- Dodge and Counter: Learning enemy attack patterns and mastering the dodge (X/A) is crucial. A well-timed dodge can set you up for a powerful counter-attack, especially against stronger opponents. Invest in skills that improve your dodge distance and recovery.
- Environmental Awareness: Always survey your surroundings. Bicycles, traffic cones, signboards, and even potted plants can be picked up and used as weapons (Triangle/Y). These often deal more damage than your bare fists, especially early in the game.
Experience & Skill Progression
Yakuza 6 introduces a new experience system based on five different stat categories. Understanding how to efficiently gain these points is vital for Kiryu's growth.
- Balanced Stat Growth: While it might be tempting to focus on a single stat, aim for a balanced approach, especially in the early game. Upgrading all five stats (Strength, Agility, Spirit, Technique, Charm) unlocks more powerful skills and abilities.
- Food is Your Primary XP Source: Eating at restaurants is the most consistent and efficient way to gain experience points.
- Kamurocho: Visit establishments like Ringer Hut for balanced meals, Sushi Gin for Spirit and Technique, or Cafe Alps for Charm and Agility.
- Onomichi: The local La Pente offers good all-around meals, while Jumangoku Coffee is excellent for Charm and Technique.
- Meal Combos: Pay attention to the "Combo" prompts when ordering. Eating specific combinations of dishes at a single restaurant will grant significant bonus experience. Experiment with different menus to find optimal combos.
- Substories & Mini-Games: Completing substories not only provides engaging narratives but also awards substantial experience across various categories. Mini-games like Batting Cages, Darts, or the Clan Creator also offer experience, often tied to specific stats.
- Training with the Guru: Seek out the "Rizap" gym in Kamurocho. Participating in their training programs, which involve specific meal plans and exercises, can provide a massive boost to your stats. This is particularly useful for targeting specific stat deficiencies.
- Skill Prioritization:
- Early Game: Focus on unlocking basic combat enhancements like increased health (HP) and attack power. The "Guard Break" and "Quickstep" skills are also highly recommended.
- Mid Game: Prioritize skills that enhance Extreme Heat Mode, unlock new Heat Actions, and improve your grab and throw capabilities. Don't forget passive skills that increase item drop rates or money earned.
- Late Game: Invest in the more expensive, powerful skills that provide significant stat boosts or unlock Kiryu's ultimate abilities.
Exploration & Side Activities
Kamurocho and Onomichi are bustling with life and opportunities beyond the main story.
- Treasure Hunting: Keep an eye out for glowing spots on the ground. These often contain valuable items, including healing consumables, crafting materials, or even rare equipment. Check alleys, rooftops, and behind buildings.
- Vending Machines: These are your go-to for quick healing items like Staminan X or Toughness Z. Always stock up before a major fight.
- Locker Keys: Scattered throughout both cities are locker keys. Each key corresponds to a locker containing a useful item. Collect them all for a steady supply of resources and occasional rare gear. Use the "Locker Key Finder" app on your smartphone to make this easier.
- Smartphone Apps: Kiryu's smartphone is more than just a plot device.
- Troublr: Respond to Troublr requests for quick fights and experience.
- Clan Creator: Manage your gang and participate in strategic battles. This is a significant source of money and experience.
- Camera: Take photos of cats for the "Nyan Nyan Cafe" substory or scenic spots for other quests.
- Don Quijote: This discount store in Kamurocho is a great place to buy healing items and some unique accessories at reasonable prices.
Money Management
Money isn't as critical as experience, but it's still essential for buying food, items, and upgrading your Clan Creator. Here's how to keep your wallet fat:
- Clan Creator: Successfully completing Clan Creator missions is a fantastic way to earn large sums of money, especially in the later stages.
- Troublr Missions: While primarily for experience, some Troublr missions also offer cash rewards.
- Selling Unused Items: Check your inventory regularly and sell any items you don't foresee using at a pawn shop like Ebisu Pawn in Kamurocho. Crafting materials you have in excess can also be sold.
- Gambling: While risky, success at mini-games like Mahjong or Shogi can net you significant winnings, which can then be exchanged for prizes or sold for cash.
