Combat & Abilities
Welcome, Dragon of Dojima, to the comprehensive guide on mastering combat and developing Kiryu's formidable abilities in Yakuza Kiwami 2. The Dragon Engine brings a fluid, dynamic fighting system that rewards strategic thinking and quick reflexes. This section will equip you with the knowledge to dominate every street brawl and boss encounter.
Understanding the Combat System
Kiwami 2's combat is a real-time brawler with RPG elements. Kiryu has a single, powerful fighting style, but its versatility comes from a wide array of unlockable abilities and Heat Actions. Pay close attention to your surroundings; almost anything can be picked up and used as a weapon!
Basic Combat Flow
- Light Attacks (Square): Quick jabs and kicks. Good for initiating combos and maintaining pressure.
- Heavy Attacks (Triangle): Slower, more powerful strikes. Often used to finish combos or break enemy guards.
- Grabs (Circle): Essential for crowd control and setting up devastating Heat Actions. Can be used on stunned enemies or to interrupt attacks.
- Dodge (X): Your primary defensive maneuver. Use it to evade incoming attacks and reposition yourself. A well-timed dodge can open enemies up for counter-attacks.
- Guard (L1): Blocks most frontal attacks, reducing damage. However, it can be broken by heavy attacks or prolonged assault.
- Heat Gauge: Builds up as you land hits, take damage, or taunt enemies. A full Heat Gauge allows for powerful Heat Actions.
Heat Actions: The Dragon's Fury
Heat Actions are cinematic, high-damage finishers that consume segments of your Heat Gauge. They are crucial for quickly dispatching tough enemies and bosses. The context of your environment and enemy state determines which Heat Actions are available.
Key Heat Actions to Master Early:
- Essence of Wall Crush: Grab an enemy (Circle) and press Triangle near a wall. Devastating damage and often knocks out weaker foes.
- Essence of the Extreme: When your Heat Gauge is full and glowing blue, press Triangle. This is Kiryu's ultimate finisher, dealing massive damage to a single target.
- Essence of Weaponry: Pick up a weapon (Circle) and press Triangle when near an enemy. The specific action depends on the weapon (e.g., bicycle swing, traffic cone smash).
- Essence of Lunge: While sprinting (R2 + X), press Triangle near an enemy. Great for closing distances and initiating combat with a powerful strike.
Ability Unlocks & Experience Points (XP)
Kiryu's growth is tied to five different types of experience points:
- Strength (Red XP): Enhances attack power and unlocks powerful offensive abilities.
- Agility (Blue XP): Improves movement speed, dodge capabilities, and unlocks evasive maneuvers.
- Spirit (Yellow XP): Boosts Kiryu's health and Heat Gauge regeneration, unlocking defensive and Heat-related skills.
- Technique (Green XP): Unlocks new combo strings, grab variations, and weapon proficiencies.
- Charm (Purple XP): Primarily affects social interactions and some minigame benefits, but also unlocks a few combat-adjacent skills like increased item drop rates.
You earn XP by fighting, completing substories, eating at restaurants, and engaging in various minigames. Prioritize investing in Strength, Agility, and Spirit early on to significantly boost your combat effectiveness.
Recommended Early Ability Unlocks:
Access the Abilities menu from your phone (Touchpad) and navigate to "Abilities."
- Double Finisher (Technique): Allows for an extra heavy attack at the end of a combo. Essential for increasing damage output.
- Quickstep Cancel (Agility): Allows you to cancel out of attack animations with a dodge. Crucial for maintaining offensive pressure while staying safe.
- Heat Gauge Boost (Spirit): Increases the rate at which your Heat Gauge fills. More Heat means more Heat Actions.
- Komaki Parry (Strength): A powerful counter-attack. Requires precise timing but can turn the tide of a difficult fight. You'll learn this from Komaki, who can be found in the Champion District in Kamurocho after Chapter 5.
- Komaki Dharma Tumbler (Agility): Another Komaki technique that allows you to quickly recover from being knocked down. Invaluable for avoiding follow-up attacks.
Weapons & Gear
While Kiryu is a master of bare-knuckle combat, weapons can provide a significant advantage, especially against tougher opponents or groups. Weapons have durability and will break after a certain number of uses.
Finding and Equipping Weapons:
- Environmental Weapons: Look for objects like bicycles, traffic cones, signboards, and even potted plants. Press Circle to pick them up.
- Purchased Weapons: Visit weapon shops like Don Quijote (various locations) or the Dragon Palace Casino (Kamurocho, after Chapter 5) for more specialized gear.
- Crafted Weapons: The Weapon Workshop, unlocked through a substory, allows you to craft powerful weapons using materials found throughout the game.
- Equipping: Access the "Equipment" menu from your phone. You can equip one main weapon and various accessories.
Recommended Early Gear:
- Sturdy Iron Pipe: A reliable early-game weapon found in many street fights or purchased cheaply.
- Bulletproof Vest: Reduces damage taken. Can be bought at various stores or found in lockers. Look for Locker Key A1 in Theater Square for an early one.
- Rage Talisman: An accessory that increases your attack power when your health is low. Can be found or purchased later in the game.
Healing & Items
Always carry healing items! Combat in Kiwami 2 can be brutal, and a well-timed healing item can prevent a game over.
Essential Healing Items:
- Staminan Royale: Fully restores health and a significant portion of your Heat Gauge. Often found in convenience stores like Poppo or M Store.
- Toughness Z: Restores a good chunk of health. Cheaper and more common than Staminan Royale.
- Bento Boxes: Found at various food stalls and convenience stores, offering decent health restoration for their price.
Consider investing in the Bottomless Stomach ability (Spirit) to increase the effectiveness of healing items and food.
Combat Strategies & Tips
- Crowd Control is Key: Don't get surrounded. Use grabs, wide-swinging weapon attacks, and Heat Actions to thin out groups of enemies.
- Guard Break: Enemies who guard frequently can be vulnerable to heavy attacks (Triangle) or charged heavy attacks.
- Environmental Awareness: Always be on the lookout for objects to use as weapons or walls to perform Heat Actions against.
- Prioritize Threatening Enemies: Focus on enemies with weapons or those who deal high damage first.
- Learn Enemy Patterns: Bosses and mini-bosses have distinct attack patterns. Observe and learn when to dodge, guard, or counter.
- Taunt (Up on D-Pad): Taunting builds Heat, but leaves you vulnerable. Use it strategically when enemies are down or at a distance.
- Eat for XP: Regularly visit restaurants and try different dishes. Many grant bonus XP, which is vital for character progression.
- Substories for Skills: Some substories unlock unique abilities or trainers. Don't skip them!
By understanding these mechanics and consistently upgrading Kiryu's abilities, you'll be well on your way to becoming an unstoppable force in the streets of Kamurocho and Sotenbori.
