Difficulty Settings

Yakuza Kiwami 2 offers a range of difficulty settings to suit every player, from those looking to enjoy the story without much challenge to seasoned brawlers seeking a true test of their skills. Your chosen difficulty impacts enemy health, damage output, and the frequency of encounters. You can select your preferred difficulty at the start of a new game. While you can generally lower the difficulty mid-game, increasing it is usually restricted to New Game+.

Difficulty Options Explained

  • Easy: This setting is ideal for players who want to focus on the narrative and explore Kamurocho and Sotenbori without significant combat hurdles. Enemies deal minimal damage and have reduced health. Kiryu's attacks are more potent, and Heat accumulates quickly. This is perfect for first-time players or those returning after a long break.
  • Normal: The standard experience, offering a balanced challenge for most players. Enemies pose a moderate threat, requiring some strategic thinking and proper use of Kiryu's abilities. This is the recommended starting point for players familiar with the Yakuza series or action games in general.
  • Hard: For those who enjoy a tougher fight. Enemies hit harder, have more health, and are more aggressive. You'll need to master dodging, guarding, and utilizing your Heat Actions effectively. Resource management (healing items, weapon durability) becomes more crucial on this setting. Expect to spend more time grinding for experience and money to upgrade Kiryu's stats and learn new abilities.
  • Legend: The ultimate challenge in Yakuza Kiwami 2. This difficulty is unlocked after completing the game once on any other setting. On Legend, enemies are incredibly resilient and deal devastating damage. Even common street thugs can be dangerous if underestimated. Healing items are less effective, and you'll often face multiple powerful opponents simultaneously. Furthermore, saving is restricted to specific locations (phone booths) and there are no retries if you fall in battle – a Game Over means returning to your last save.

Strategies for Higher Difficulties (Hard & Legend)

Tackling Hard or Legend difficulty requires a shift in playstyle. Here are some key strategies:

  • Prioritize Upgrades: Invest your experience points wisely. Focus on upgrading Kiryu's Health, Attack, and Defense first. Unlock powerful Heat Actions and abilities that grant invincibility frames or crowd control. The "Essence of Extreme Heat" and "Essence of the Dragon God" are invaluable.
  • Weapon Usage: Don't shy away from using weapons. Durable weapons like the Dragon Sword (obtained from the Weapon Shop in Kamurocho's Theater Alley after completing certain substories) or the Photon Blade RG (available from the secret vendor in Sotenbori's Shofukucho) can turn the tide of battle. Always carry a few repair kits.
  • Healing Item Stockpile: Always enter significant fights with a full inventory of healing items. Stock up on high-tier items like Staminan Royale, Tauriner Full, and Toughness Infinity from convenience stores like Poppo or M Store. carry some Sushi Set or Bento Box for quick health regeneration during exploration.
  • Environmental Awareness: Utilize the environment to your advantage. Grab bicycles, traffic cones, or signboards as weapons. Perform environmental Heat Actions whenever possible for massive damage and invincibility frames.
  • Dodging and Guarding: Master the art of dodging (R2/RT) and guarding (L1/LB). Perfect guards can stagger enemies, opening them up for counters. Evading attacks is often more crucial than tanking hits on higher difficulties.
  • Heat Management: Efficiently build and spend your Heat. Use Heat Actions strategically to clear crowds, deal heavy damage to bosses, or gain temporary invincibility. The Essence of Mashing (rapidly tap buttons for a flurry of attacks) is excellent for single targets.
  • Substories for Strength: Don't neglect substories. Many reward valuable experience, money, and even powerful gear or abilities that will make the main story much more manageable.
  • Grinding: If you find yourself struggling, don't be afraid to grind. Engage in street fights, complete Clan Creator missions, or play the Cabaret Club Grand Prix to earn experience and cash for upgrades.

Remember, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a journey. Choose the difficulty that best suits your desired experience, and don't hesitate to adjust it if you feel the game is too easy or too frustrating (unless you're on Legend!).
