Guarding & Perfect Guarding
Mastering defensive maneuvers is crucial for survival in the turn-based combat of Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Guarding allows your characters to reduce incoming damage, while a perfectly timed guard can negate damage entirely and even create openings for counter-attacks. Understanding these mechanics will sificantly improve your combat efficiency.
During your turn, or when it's an enemy's turn, you can choose to have your active character guard. This is done by selecting the 'Guard' option from the command menu. When a character guards, they adopt a defensive stance, sificantly reducing the damage they take from physical attacks. However, guarding does not reduce damage from magic-based attacks or certain special abilities. It's a fundamental defensive action that should be used frequently, especially when facing powerful enemies or when your party members are low on health.
The more advanced technique is the 'Perfect Guard.' This requires precise timing. If you press the guard button just as an enemy's attack is about to land, your character will perform a perfect guard. A successful perfect guard negates all damage from that attack, regardless of its power. Furthermore, it often stuns the enemy briefly, leaving them vulnerable to your next attack. This can be particularly useful for interrupting powerful enemy skills or creating an opportunity to land a critical hit.
| Action | Input | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guard | Select 'Guard' from command menu | Reduces incoming physical damage | Standard defensive move |
| Perfect Guard | Press Guard button just before attack lands | Negates all damage, brief stun | Requires precise timing |
Practicing perfect guards against different enemy types is highly recommended. Some enemies have predictable attack patterns that make perfect guarding easier to execute. Mastering this technique can turn the tide of difficult battles, allowing you to survive otherwise devastating attacks and capitalize on enemy openings. Don't underestimate the power of defense; it's just as important as offense in Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
