Boss Fight: Masumi Arakawa (Chapter 10)
Ichiban faces his former Patriarch, Masumi Arakawa, in a deeply personal and challenging battle that serves as a significant test of your party's cohesion and strategic thinking. This fight occurs during a pivotal moment in the narrative in Chapter 10, demanding careful preparation and execution.
Recommended Level and Party Setup
It is highly recommended that your party members are at least Level 50-52 before engaging Masumi Arakawa. While it's possible to win at a slightly lower level, being adequately leveled will significantly ease the difficulty curve and allow for more strategic flexibility. This is a solo boss fight, so focus your party composition on maximizing single-target damage, consistent healing, and crucial debuffs.
- Ichiban (Hero): Essential for his leadership skills, powerful single-target attacks, and access to healing/buffs. His unique Hero job skills are invaluable for this fight.
- Healer: A dedicated healer is absolutely crucial.
- Saeko (Idol): Offers superior group healing (though less critical here) and revival skills, making her an excellent choice for keeping the party healthy. Her Charismatic Speech can also buff the party.
- Nanba (Homeless Guy): Provides strong elemental attacks, some healing over time, and most importantly, access to powerful debuffs.
- Damage Dealers: You'll need consistent, high single-target damage.
- Adachi (Detective): A reliable physical damage dealer with good survivability.
- Joon-gi Han (Hitman): Excellent for high single-target damage and can inflict status ailments.
- Zhao (Gangster): Another strong physical damage dealer with good area-of-effect options, though single-target is key here.
- Support/Debuffer: Someone capable of applying debuffs or providing additional buffs can turn the tide.
- Nanba (Homeless Guy): His Pigeon Migration skill is a game-changer, significantly lowering Arakawa's Defense.
- Saeko (Barmaid/Idol): Can buff allies' Attack and Defense.
Boss Strategy: Masumi Arakawa
Masumi Arakawa is a formidable opponent with powerful physical attacks and a high defense. He has no specific elemental weakness, meaning you can rely on your strongest physical and magical attacks without concern for resistances. The key to this fight lies in sustained damage output, meticulous resource management, and precise defensive maneuvers, particularly guarding against his charge attacks.
Phase 1: Initial Assault and Establishing Control
Arakawa begins the fight with strong single-target physical attacks. Your primary goal in this phase is to establish a rhythm of offense and defense while conserving MP for the later stages. Focus on:
- Sustained Damage: Utilize your strongest single-target attacks from Ichiban and your primary damage dealers. Don't hold back too much, but be mindful of MP. Regular attacks are perfectly viable for building up skill points and conserving MP.
- Buffs and Debuffs:
- Debuffs: Skills that lower Arakawa's Defense are incredibly effective and should be applied early and maintained throughout the fight. Nanba's "Pigeon Migration" (Homeless Guy job) can inflict a significant Defense debuff, making all subsequent attacks far more potent. This is a top priority.
- Buffs: Boost your party's Attack and Defense. Ichiban's "Hero's Vigor" or Saeko's "Charismatic Speech" (Idol job) can increase your party's damage output, while Defense buffs can mitigate Arakawa's heavy hits.
- Healing: Keep your HP high. Arakawa hits hard, and a single critical hit can be devastating. Use your dedicated healer's skills like Saeko's "Magical Concert" or Nanba's "Essence of Pneumatic Punch" (if needed for emergency healing, though his primary role is often debuffing/damage). Don't be afraid to use items if a character is in critical condition and your healer's turn is too far off.
Identifying and Guarding Charge Attacks (Critical Mechanic)
Arakawa frequently uses powerful charge attacks that can inflict massive damage, often leading to a one-shot KO, if not guarded against. Identifying these attacks and timing your guard is absolutely critical to survival. Missing a guard on these attacks is a common pitfall that can quickly lead to a party wipe.
- Visual Cue: Arakawa will visibly wind up for a more powerful attack. Look for him to take a distinctive, exaggerated stance, often with a red aura or a brief flash around him, indicating a charged move. He might also have a unique animation where he pulls back his fist or weapon.
- Audio Cue: Listen for a specific sound effect, often a deeper grunt, a distinct "shing" sound, or a building tension sound effect that accompanies his wind-up.
- Timing the Guard: When you see or hear these cues, immediately press the guard button (usually Triangle on PlayStation, Y on Xbox, or the corresponding key on PC). A perfectly timed guard will significantly reduce incoming damage, often by 50% or more, and prevent critical status effects. Missing the guard can lead to a party member being knocked out or severely weakened, forcing you to waste turns on revival. Practice this timing!
Phase 2: Increased Aggression and MP Management
As Arakawa's HP drops (roughly below 50%), he will become more aggressive, increasing the frequency and power of his charge attacks and potentially using more multi-target abilities. This is where MP management becomes paramount, as the fight can be a war of attrition.
- Prioritize Healing and MP: Ensure your healer has enough MP to keep the party topped off. Use MP restoring items on your healer if necessary. Consider having multiple party members carry MP recovery items.
- Reapply Debuffs: Reapply Defense debuffs (like Nanba's Pigeon Migration) as they expire to maintain your damage advantage. The fight will be significantly harder if Arakawa's defense is not lowered.
- Essence Skills: Unleash your most powerful Essence Skills (Extreme Skills) when Arakawa is debuffed or when you need a burst of damage to push him into the next phase or finish him off. Ichiban's "Mega Swing" or "Essence of Orbital Laser" (if unlocked through the Foreman job) are excellent choices. Save some for the final push.
- Item Usage: Don't hesitate to use healing items like high-grade Bentos, First Aid Kits, or Revival items if your healer is struggling, out of MP, or if a character needs immediate attention. MP-restoring items like Energy Drinks (especially the higher-tier ones) are incredibly valuable for your healer and main damage dealers.
- Focus Fire: Continue to focus all your damage on Arakawa. There are no additional enemies in this fight.
Common Pitfalls and Tips
- Under-leveling: Attempting this fight significantly below Level 50 will make it exceptionally difficult due to Arakawa's high damage and defense. Grind side quests, substories, and the Sotenbori Battle Arena if you're struggling.
- Ignoring Debuffs: Not applying or maintaining Defense debuffs on Arakawa will prolong the fight and make it much harder to deal meaningful damage.
- Missing Guards: This is the biggest killer. Practice timing your guards for his charge attacks. If you consistently miss, consider equipping accessories that boost defense or HP.
- Poor MP Management: Spamming high-cost skills early will leave your party drained for the later, more aggressive phases. Balance skill usage with regular attacks and item consumption.
- Lack of Healing: A dedicated healer is non-negotiable. Ensure they have enough MP and speed to act consistently.
