3-1: Gusty Gateways

Welcome to 3-1: Gusty Gateways, a level that truly lives up to its name! Prepare to master the art of wind manipulation as powerful gusts will either be your greatest ally or your most frustrating foe. This stage introduces dynamic wind currents that affect Yoshi, enemies, and even some platforms. Timing your jumps and throws, and understanding how to use the wind to your advantage, is key to collecting all the treasures and reaching the goal.

Throughout this guide, we'll pinpoint the exact locations of all five Wonder Wools and five Smiley Flowers, ensuring you complete the level with a perfect score. We'll also highlight where to find the Stamp Patches and an abundance of beads.

Walkthrough and Collectibles

As you begin the level, head right. You'll immediately encounter your first wind currents. Pay attention to their direction and strength.

  • Beads: Many beads are scattered along the main path. Keep an eye out for bead trails that lead to hidden areas or indicate the presence of a collectible.

Area 1: The Initial Gusts

Proceed past the first few wind-affected platforms. You'll soon come across a series of platforms with strong upward gusts.

  • Smiley Flower #1: After the first set of platforms where the wind pushes you upwards, you'll see a platform to your right with a small gap. Instead of jumping to the next main platform, let the wind carry you slightly to the right and upward. You'll spot a hidden cloud (throw a yarn ball at it) which will reveal a platform leading to the first Smiley Flower.
  • Wonder Wool #1: Continue right from Smiley Flower #1. You'll reach a small alcove with a Piranha Plant. Defeat it. Above this alcove, there’s a hidden cloud. Jump and throw a yarn ball to reveal it, then jump up to collect the first Wonder Wool.

Area 2: Windy Passages and Hidden Paths

Move forward, navigating more wind-swept platforms. You'll encounter Shy Guys that are also affected by the wind, making them a bit trickier to hit with yarn balls.

  • Stamp Patch #1: Shortly after the first checkpoint, you'll see a series of platforms with strong horizontal winds. Look for a small, seemingly empty gap between two platforms. Jump into the gap and let the wind push you left into a hidden passage containing the first Stamp Patch.
  • Smiley Flower #2: After the Stamp Patch, you'll come to a section with a large, moving platform that sways with the wind. Above this platform, in the upper-right corner, is a hidden cloud. Time your jump from the moving platform and throw a yarn ball to reveal a path to the second Smiley Flower.
  • Wonder Wool #2: Following Smiley Flower #2, you'll reach a vertical shaft with strong upward gusts. Instead of immediately going up, look to the left wall. There's a small opening. Let the wind carry you into this opening to find the second Wonder Wool.

Area 3: The Gusty Gauntlet

This section features more intense wind patterns and enemies. Precision jumping and careful timing are crucial here.

  • Smiley Flower #3: As you progress through the "Gusty Gauntlet" section, you'll encounter several platforms with strong horizontal winds. Look for a platform that has a small, visible gap underneath it. Drop down into this gap, and you'll find the third Smiley Flower tucked away.
  • Wonder Wool #3: After Smiley Flower #3, you'll come to a large open area with a strong upward wind current. Instead of riding the current straight up, look for a series of small, barely visible platforms on the right side. Carefully jump across these, using the wind to aid your movement, to reach a hidden ledge with the third Wonder Wool.
  • Stamp Patch #2: In the same large open area as Wonder Wool #3, ride the main upward wind current. As you approach the top, look for a cloud on the left side. Hit it with a yarn ball to reveal a hidden platform leading to the second Stamp Patch.

Area 4: Approaching the Goal

The final stretch of the level will test your wind-riding skills one last time.

  • Smiley Flower #4: Near the end of the level, you'll encounter a series of platforms that move up and down with the wind. On one of these platforms, there will be a Piranha Plant. Defeat it, then look directly above where the Piranha Plant was. There's a hidden cloud. Hit it to reveal a platform leading to the fourth Smiley Flower.
  • Wonder Wool #4: After Smiley Flower #4, you'll see a large gust of wind pushing you to the right. Instead of letting it carry you to the next main platform, look down and slightly to the left. There's a small, hidden alcove below the main path. Carefully drop down, using your flutter jump to control your descent, to find the fourth Wonder Wool.
  • Smiley Flower #5: Just before the final pipe leading to the goal, you'll see a series of small, floating platforms. The last Smiley Flower is located high above these platforms. You'll need to use a combination of flutter jumps and the upward wind currents to reach it. Alternatively, if you have a full stock of yarn balls, you can often reveal a hidden cloud by throwing one upwards in the general vicinity.
  • Wonder Wool #5: The final Wonder Wool is located directly above the goal post. To reach it, you'll need to jump onto the goal post itself, then perform a high flutter jump. There's a hidden cloud directly above the goal post that, when hit, will drop the last Wonder Wool for you to collect.

Once you've collected all the Wonder Wools and Smiley Flowers, head through the final pipe to complete 3-1: Gusty Gateways!
