4-2: Frozen Follies - Complete Guide
Welcome to Frozen Follies, a chilly adventure through icy caverns and slippery platforms! This level introduces several unique mechanics, including frozen enemies, pushable ice blocks, and the ever-present danger of slipping on slick surfaces. Mastering your movement and utilizing the environment will be key to collecting all the goodies.
Recommended Power Badges
- Immunity to Ice: This badge is incredibly useful for this level. It prevents Yoshi from slipping on icy surfaces, making platforming much easier and reducing the risk of falling into bottomless pits or dangerous water. You can unlock this Power Badge by collecting all five Wonder Wools in World 3-5: "Burt's Bouncing Castle" and then purchasing it from the Badge Shop for 2,000 Beads.
- Full Health: Always a solid choice for beginners or those struggling with combat.
- Watermelon Seed Spit: While not strictly necessary, the rapid-fire seeds can be helpful for quickly dispatching multiple frozen enemies or activating distant targets.
Enemies Encountered
- Ice Guys: Standard Shy Guys encased in ice. They slide around on platforms. A single egg or stomp will defeat them.
- Ice Snifits: Snifits that shoot icy projectiles. Their shots can freeze Yoshi temporarily if he's not immune to ice. Defeat them with an egg or by stomping on their heads.
- Freezeflames: Small, fiery enemies that leave a trail of ice behind them. They can be defeated with an egg. Their fire can melt certain ice blocks.
- Ice Pokey: A towering enemy made of ice segments. Each segment must be hit with an egg to be destroyed. The head is the final segment.
Walkthrough and Collectibles
This guide will lead you through Frozen Follies, ensuring you find every collectible and overcome every challenge. Keep an eye out for hidden clouds and suspicious-looking walls!
Section 1: The Icy Entrance
- Start of the Level: As you begin, head right. You'll immediately encounter a few Ice Guys sliding on the first icy platform.
- Smiley Flower #1: Just past the first group of Ice Guys, you'll see a large, pushable ice block. Push it to the right. Behind it, a hidden cloud will appear. Hit the cloud with an egg to reveal the first Smiley Flower.
- Hidden Cloud (Beads): Continue right. Before the first set of rotating ice platforms, jump up to hit a visible Winged Cloud containing 50 Beads.
- Rotating Ice Platforms: Carefully navigate the rotating ice platforms. If you have the Immunity to Ice badge, this section is much easier. Otherwise, time your jumps carefully to avoid slipping off.
- Wonder Wool #1: After the rotating platforms, you'll come to a small alcove with a Freezeflame enemy. Let the Freezeflame melt the small ice block in the alcove, or use an egg to defeat it and then melt the block with another Freezeflame from further ahead (or a fire-based Power Badge if you have one equipped). Inside the melted block's space is a hidden cloud. Hit it to reveal the first Wonder Wool.
Section 2: The Ice Block Maze
- Pushable Ice Blocks: You'll enter an area with several large, pushable ice blocks. Your goal is to push them to create a path forward.
- Smiley Flower #2: The second large ice block you encounter (after the first one you push to the right to clear a path) can be pushed left into a small recess. This reveals a hidden passage above. Jump up into this passage to find a hidden cloud containing Smiley Flower #2.
- Hidden Cloud (Beads): After pushing the third ice block to open the main path, look above the newly opened path. There's a visible Winged Cloud containing 50 Beads.
- Wonder Wool #2: Continue through the ice block maze. You'll reach a point where you need to push an ice block onto a switch to open a gate. Before pushing the block onto the switch, push it all the way to the right. Then, jump on top of it and jump again to reveal a hidden cloud above, containing Wonder Wool #2.
Section 3: Freezeflame Caverns
- Freezeflame Gauntlet: This section features numerous Freezeflames and Ice Snifits. Use your eggs to clear a path.
- Smiley Flower #3: Shortly after the first group of Freezeflames, you'll see a tall stack of ice blocks. A Freezeflame will be moving back and forth on a platform above. Lure the Freezeflame to melt the bottom-most ice block, or hit it with an egg to defeat it and then use another Freezeflame. Once the block is gone, enter the small alcove to find Smiley Flower #3.
- Mid-Point Bell: You'll soon reach the mid-point bell. Hit it to save your progress.
- Wonder Wool #3: Immediately after the mid-point bell, jump onto the platform above. There's a small ice wall to your left. Ground Pound the ice wall to break it, revealing a hidden room with Wonder Wool #3.
Section 4: Ice Pokey's Domain
- Ice Pokey Encounter: You'll enter an open area with an Ice Pokey. Use your eggs to systematically destroy its segments, starting from the bottom. Aim for its head last.
- Smiley Flower #4: After defeating the Ice Pokey, look to the right. There's a small platform with a visible Winged Cloud. Hit it with an egg to reveal Smiley Flower #4.
- Hidden Cloud (Beads): Continue right, past where the Ice Pokey was. Jump up to hit a hidden cloud containing 50 Beads.
- Wonder Wool #4: You'll come to a series of platforms leading upwards. On the second-to-last platform before the highest point, look for a suspicious-looking ice block on the left wall. Ground Pound it to reveal a hidden passage leading to Wonder Wool #4.
Section 5: The Final Stretch
- More Rotating Platforms: Navigate another set of rotating ice platforms. Be cautious of falling Ice Guys from above.
- Smiley Flower #5: As you approach the final set of rotating platforms, you'll see a small gap between the platforms and the main wall on the right. Drop down into this gap to find a hidden alcove with Smiley Flower #5.
- Wonder Wool #5: After collecting the last Smiley Flower, proceed to the right. You'll see the Goal Ring in the distance. Before jumping to the Goal Ring, look directly above the last rotating platform. There's a hidden cloud nestled against the ceiling. Jump or throw an egg to hit it, revealing the final Wonder Wool.
- Goal Ring: Jump through the Goal Ring to complete the level!
