Welcome to Snowball Shenanigans, a frosty level that introduces the perilous yet playful mechanics of rolling snowballs and projectile-tossing enemies! This stage demands precise timing and a keen eye for hidden paths. Get ready to navigate icy platforms, dodge massive snowballs, and even use them to your advantage to uncover all the secrets.
Level Overview & New Mechanics
- Rolling Snowballs: These large, destructive spheres roll along predetermined paths. They can crush enemies, break certain barriers, and even serve as temporary platforms if you're quick enough.
- Snowball-Throwing Shy Guys: These new enemies, often found perched on ledges, will hurl small snowballs at Yoshi. Their projectiles can stun you or knock you into hazards. Defeat them with a well-aimed egg or by bouncing on their heads.
- Icy Surfaces: Expect slippery platforms that require careful movement to avoid sliding into pits or hazards.
Collectible Checklist
To achieve 100% completion, you'll need to find all five Smiley Flowers and all five Wonder Wools. Collecting all Smiley Flowers unlocks a bonus level, while gathering all Wonder Wools in a level reconstructs a new Yoshi pattern!
Detailed Walkthrough & Collectible Locations
Section 1: The Initial Descent & First Snowball
The level begins on a high platform. Head right, and you'll immediately encounter your first large rolling snowball. This particular snowball is a hazard.
- Smiley Flower #1: After the first large rolling snowball passes, carefully drop down to the platform it just cleared. Instead of continuing right, look for a small, hidden alcove directly below the starting platform, accessible by a precise drop or flutter. This flower is tucked away from the main path, requiring you to backtrack slightly after avoiding the initial snowball.
Continue right, navigating past a few snowball-throwing Shy Guys. Use your eggs to defeat them or bounce on their heads.
Section 2: Hidden Clouds & Breaking Barriers
You'll reach an area with multiple snowball-throwing Shy Guys on elevated platforms and several breakable ice blocks.
- Wonder Wool #1: After defeating the first few snowball-throwing Shy Guys and before encountering the section with multiple breakable ice blocks, look for a series of platforms leading upwards. Above the highest platform where a Shy Guy is throwing snowballs, flutter jump to reveal a hidden Winged Cloud. Hit it with an egg to reveal the Wonder Wool.
- Smiley Flower #2: In the section with numerous breakable ice blocks, you'll notice a large snowball rolling from the left. Position yourself so the snowball breaks through a specific barrier on the right side of the screen, revealing a hidden passage. This flower is directly behind the barrier that is two blocks high and located on the lower path.
Proceed by using the rolling snowballs to clear your path. Remember, you can often stand on top of these snowballs for a brief moment to reach higher areas, but be careful not to get crushed!
Section 3: Riding the Snowballs & Mid-Level Checkpoint
You'll soon arrive at a checkpoint flag. Beyond this, the level introduces larger, rideable snowballs.
- Smiley Flower #3: Immediately after passing the checkpoint, you'll see a large snowball rolling towards you from the right. Jump onto this snowball and ride it. As it rolls, it will pass over a small gap. Jump off the snowball just before it falls into the pit and flutter to a small, isolated platform on the left, where this flower is waiting.
- Wonder Wool #2: After collecting Smiley Flower #3, continue right. You'll encounter another large, rideable snowball. This time, ride it all the way to the right. As it approaches a wall, jump off and flutter upwards to a hidden ledge above the main path. The Wonder Wool is located on this elevated platform.
Navigate the next set of platforms, which may be icy, and deal with more snowball-throwing Shy Guys.
Section 4: The Ascent & Tricky Jumps
This part of the level involves more vertical progression, often requiring precise jumps and egg throws.
- Smiley Flower #4: As you ascend, you'll come across a series of moving platforms with gaps between them. Look for a small, seemingly inaccessible alcove high up on the left side, just before the next set of snowball-throwing enemies. You'll need to perform a high flutter jump from a moving platform or use an enemy as a bounce pad to reach it. Alternatively, if you have enough eggs, throw one at a visible Winged Cloud located just above the alcove to reveal the flower.
- Wonder Wool #3: After Smiley Flower #4, you'll encounter a section with several snowball-throwing Shy Guys positioned on ledges above a pit. Defeat them and then look for a hidden Winged Cloud floating directly above the central Shy Guy's platform. Hit it with an egg to make the Wonder Wool appear.
Section 5: Final Stretch & Goal Ring
The last section of the level leads directly to the goal ring, but not without a few more hidden surprises.
- Wonder Wool #4: Near the very end of the level, just before the final series of platforms leading to the goal ring, you'll see a large, stationary snowball blocking a path. You need to hit this snowball with an egg to push it off its perch. Once it rolls away, it will reveal a hidden passage behind it containing this Wonder Wool.
- Smiley Flower #5: This final flower is located directly above the goal ring. To reach it, you'll need to perform a high flutter jump from the platform just before the goal. Alternatively, if you're struggling with the jump, look for a hidden Winged Cloud slightly to the left and above the goal ring. Hit it with an egg to make the flower drop down.
- Wonder Wool #5: After collecting Smiley Flower #5, do not enter the goal ring immediately. Instead, look to the far right, beyond the goal ring. There's a small, hidden platform or a series of invisible clouds that can be revealed by throwing an egg. This Wonder Wool is located on this secret path, requiring you to bypass the goal ring momentarily.
