4-6: The Great Glacier
Welcome to "The Great Glacier," a challenging stage that puts your timing and platforming precision to the test. This icy level is defined by its dynamic environment, featuring large, often fast-moving glaciers and treacherous, collapsing ice platforms. Expect to encounter enemies that are either stationary on these icy surfaces or carried along by the moving terrain, requiring quick reflexes to deal with them.
To achieve 100% completion in this level, you'll need to collect all five Smiley Flowers, five Wonder Wools, and gather at least 1000 beads. There are also two Stamp Patches to uncover.
Tips for the Level
- Mastering Moving Glaciers: These are your primary mode of transport and a major obstacle. Always anticipate their movement. Some collectibles require precise jumps onto or off them, while others are revealed by riding them to their full extent.
- Navigating Collapsing Ice Platforms: These platforms are temporary. The moment you land on one, prepare to jump to the next safe spot. Hesitation will lead to a fall.
- Slippery Surfaces: Remember that ice reduces Yoshi's traction. Be mindful of your momentum, especially near ledges or when making precise jumps. Short hops can help control movement.
- Strategic Egg Use: Keep a healthy stock of eggs. Many hidden clouds, enemies, and even environmental puzzles (like breaking ice blocks) require eggs. Replenish your supply at yarn baskets, which are plentiful.
- Bead Collection Mindset: Aim for beads constantly. Defeat every enemy, hit every cloud, and ground pound any suspicious-looking ice or snow patches. Many beads are hidden just off the main path or in small alcoves.

Walkthrough and Collectibles
Begin your journey by heading right from the start. You'll immediately notice the level's primary mechanic: large, blue glaciers that move horizontally across the screen. These serve as both platforms and obstacles.
- Smiley Flower #1: As you progress past the initial set of moving glaciers, you'll reach a stable platform. Look for a large, blue glacier moving back and forth just ahead. The first Smiley Flower is clearly visible on top of this moving glacier. Time your jump carefully to land on it, grab the flower, and then jump off to the next safe platform before the glacier moves too far.
- Wonder Wool #1: Shortly after the first Smiley Flower, you'll encounter a series of collapsing ice platforms. These platforms will break apart a moment after you land on them, so keep moving! Above this sequence of breaking ice, look for a hidden cloud. To reveal it, jump and flutter high above the third collapsing ice platform. Hit the cloud with an egg or by jumping into it to make the first Wonder Wool appear.
- Smiley Flower #2: Continue across more moving glaciers and collapsing ice platforms. You'll soon reach a section with three consecutive breaking ice bridges. The second Smiley Flower is located on a small, stable ice platform situated directly in the middle of this treacherous sequence. You'll need to quickly cross the first breaking bridge, land on the stable platform to grab the flower, and then immediately jump to the next breaking bridge to continue.
- Stamp Patch #1: After collecting the second Smiley Flower and navigating the breaking ice bridges, you'll land on a more solid ice block. Look for a small, stationary Shy Guy enemy here. Defeat it with an egg, and then ground pound the ice block it was standing on. This will reveal a hidden passage below, leading to a small alcove containing the first Stamp Patch.
- Wonder Wool #2: As you move further right, you'll come across a section with several Ice Guys (enemies that slide on ice). Just past these enemies, you'll see a large, vertical ice wall. To the left of this wall, there's a hidden cloud. Jump and flutter near the top-left corner of this ice wall to reveal the cloud, which contains the second Wonder Wool.
- Smiley Flower #3: Following the second Wonder Wool, you'll encounter a series of upward-moving glaciers. Ride the first upward-moving glacier. As it ascends, look to your left. The third Smiley Flower is tucked away in a small alcove in the ice wall, requiring a precise jump and flutter from the glacier to reach.
- Wonder Wool #3: After the upward-moving glaciers, you'll reach a checkpoint. From the checkpoint, proceed right. You'll see a large, horizontally moving glacier. Ride this glacier. As it moves to the right, you'll spot a pipe embedded in the background ice wall. This pipe is initially blocked by a small ice block. Hit the ice block with an egg to destroy it, then enter the pipe. Inside this secret area, you'll find the third Wonder Wool.
- Smiley Flower #4: Exit the secret pipe. Continue right, navigating more moving glaciers and avoiding the occasional Ice Guy. You'll come to a section with a large, downward-sloping glacier. The fourth Smiley Flower is located near the bottom of this slope, just before a small drop-off. Be careful not to slide past it.
- Stamp Patch #2: After collecting the fourth Smiley Flower, you'll drop down to a lower area. Here, you'll find a group of three Ice Guys patrolling a small platform. Defeat all three Ice Guys using eggs or by jumping on them. Once they are all gone, the second Stamp Patch will appear on the platform.
- Wonder Wool #4: From the location of the second Stamp Patch, continue moving right. You'll encounter a series of small, rapidly moving glaciers that act like stepping stones. Above the third of these small glaciers, there's a hidden cloud. Jump and flutter precisely to hit this cloud, revealing the fourth Wonder Wool.
- Smiley Flower #5: Near the end of the level, just before the final set of moving glaciers leading to the goal post, you'll see a large, slow-moving glacier. The fifth and final Smiley Flower is positioned directly on top of this glacier. It's hard to miss, but ensure you time your jump to land on it and grab the flower before proceeding to the goal.
- Wonder Wool #5: The final Wonder Wool is located in a secret area just before the goal post. As you approach the goal, look for a large, horizontally moving glacier that travels from left to right. Ride this glacier all the way to the rightmost edge of the screen. As it reaches its peak extension, a hidden cloud will become visible above the glacier, near the right edge of the screen. Hit this cloud with an egg to reveal the final Wonder Wool. Alternatively, if you miss the cloud, you can sometimes find a hidden pipe by ground-pounding near the very end of the glacier's path, which also leads to the final Wonder Wool.
Enemy Encounters and Strategies
This level features a few key enemies that require specific approaches:
- Ice Guys: These enemies slide across icy surfaces. They are easily defeated with a single egg or by jumping on their heads. Be mindful of their sliding paths, especially on narrow platforms or near ledges, as they can knock you off.
- Shy Guys: Standard Shy Guys are present throughout the level. They can be defeated with eggs or by jumping on them. Some may be carrying items, so defeat them to see if they drop beads.
- Para-Shy Guys: Flying Shy Guys with propellers. They often carry beads. Hit them with an egg to defeat them and collect their dropped items. Prioritize these for bead collection.
Beads and Score Maximization
To achieve the 1000-bead target for a perfect score, integrate bead collection into your gameplay:
- Defeat All Enemies: Every enemy, from Ice Guys to Para-Shy Guys, drops beads when defeated. Make it a habit to clear out all foes.
- Hit Every Cloud: Visible clouds almost always contain beads. Hidden clouds, revealed by jumping or throwing eggs, are also crucial sources.
- Ground Pound Suspicious Areas: Look for discolored or slightly raised patches of ice or snow. A ground pound can often reveal a burst of beads or even a hidden item.
- Explore Thoroughly: Many beads are placed in small alcoves, behind moving glaciers, or just off the main path. Take a moment to explore every corner before moving on.
- Yarn Baskets: While primarily for eggs, yarn baskets often release a few beads when hit.
- Collect Trails: Pay attention to trails of beads that guide you. Sometimes, these trails lead to a larger cluster or a hidden item.
By following these detailed instructions and tips, you'll be well-equipped to navigate the treacherous "Great Glacier" and collect every last item, securing a perfect score!
