Welcome to Kamek's Icy Fortress, the penultimate challenge of World 4! This level is a frosty gauntlet designed to test your platforming prowess and yarn-ball aim, culminating in a direct confrontation with Kamek himself. Expect slippery surfaces, icy enemies, and Kamek's signature magical attacks. Collecting all the Smiley Flowers, Wonder Wools, and Stamp Patches in this level requires keen observation and precise execution. Let's dive in!
Collectibles Checklist
To achieve 100% completion in Kamek's Icy Fortress, you'll need to find all the following items:
- Smiley Flowers: 5
- Wonder Wools: 5
- Stamp Patches: 20 (found by collecting 100 beads in each section)
Walkthrough: Navigating the Frozen Gauntlet
The level begins on a snowy path. Head right, past a few Shy Guys, until you reach your first icy platform. Be mindful of the slippery physics – short hops are often better than long, uncontrolled slides. Remember to collect beads as you go; every 100 beads earns you a Stamp Patch!
- Initial Ascent & First Smiley Flower:
- Immediately after the first icy platform, you'll encounter a series of small, icy platforms leading upwards. Jump carefully, collecting beads as you ascend.
- At the top, you'll see a Kamek hovering. Defeat him with a yarn ball. He'll drop some beads.
- Just beyond where Kamek was, you'll spot a visible Winged Cloud floating slightly above the path. Hit it with a yarn ball to reveal the First Smiley Flower.
- Stamp Patch 1: You should easily collect 100 beads in this opening section by defeating enemies and grabbing all visible beads.
- Icy Caverns & First Wonder Wool:
- Continue right into an icy cavern section. You'll encounter more Shy Guys and some Ice Guys (Shy Guys encased in ice). These can be defeated with a single yarn ball.
- You'll come to a gap with a series of small, moving icy platforms. Carefully jump across them, collecting beads.
- Midway across these moving platforms, look directly above you. There's a hidden Winged Cloud. Jump and flutter to hit it, or aim a yarn ball upwards. This reveals the First Wonder Wool.
- Stamp Patch 2: Continue collecting beads from enemies and pathways. The moving platforms section offers a good number.
- Kamek's Barrage & Second Smiley Flower:
- After the moving platforms, you'll enter a larger chamber where Kamek will appear and start conjuring enemies and blocks.
- Focus on dodging his magic and the enemies he creates. Use his own magic blocks as platforms if needed, and collect any beads that appear.
- Defeat Kamek with several well-aimed yarn balls. Once he's gone, a Winged Cloud will appear in the center of the room. Hit it to collect the Second Smiley Flower.
- Stamp Patch 3: The enemies Kamek summons and the beads scattered around this arena should help you reach the next 100-bead milestone.
- Frozen Blocks & Second Wonder Wool:
- Proceed right. You'll encounter sections with Frozen Blocks that crumble after you stand on them for a moment. Plan your jumps carefully, collecting beads as you cross.
- You'll reach a small alcove above the main path, accessible by jumping on some Frozen Blocks. Inside this alcove is a visible Winged Cloud. Hit it to reveal the Second Wonder Wool.
- Stamp Patch 4: The path with crumbling blocks and the alcove should provide enough beads.
- Mid-Point & Third Smiley Flower:
- Continue past more Frozen Blocks and Ice Guys, collecting beads. You'll reach a section with a large, rotating icy platform.
- Jump onto the rotating platform and ride it to the right.
- Just before the Mid-Point Bell, you'll see a Winged Cloud hovering slightly above the path. Hit it to obtain the Third Smiley Flower.
- Ring the Mid-Point Bell to save your progress and replenish your yarn supply.
- Stamp Patch 5: This section, leading up to the Mid-Point, is rich with beads.
- Spike Traps & Third Wonder Wool:
- After the Mid-Point, you'll encounter a series of platforms with Spike Traps that extend and retract from the ceiling and floor. Time your movements carefully, collecting beads in between spikes.
- In the middle of this spike trap section, there's a small, hidden passage in the ceiling. Flutter jump into it.
- Inside this secret passage, you'll find a visible Winged Cloud. Hit it for the Third Wonder Wool.
- Stamp Patch 6 & 7: The spike trap area is quite long and contains many beads. Be thorough.
- Kamek's Ice Magic & Fourth Smiley Flower:
- You'll enter another area where Kamek appears again, this time conjuring icy platforms and enemies.
- Navigate the platforms Kamek creates, being careful of the slippery surfaces and the enemies. Collect beads from defeated enemies and the environment.
- After defeating this Kamek, a Winged Cloud will appear near the exit of this section. Hit it to collect the Fourth Smiley Flower.
- Stamp Patch 8 & 9: This Kamek encounter and the surrounding platforms are a good source of beads.
- Hidden Wall & Fourth Wonder Wool:
- Immediately after the Kamek encounter, you'll see a wall to your right. Look closely at the top-right corner of this wall – there's a section of yarn that looks slightly different, almost like a loose thread.
- Throw a yarn ball at this specific spot on the wall to unravel it, revealing a hidden passage.
- Enter the passage to find the Fourth Wonder Wool.
- Stamp Patch 10: The beads in this hidden passage, combined with the previous section, should get you another patch.
- Falling Icicles & Fifth Smiley Flower:
- Continue right past the hidden wall. You'll enter a section where large Icicles fall from the ceiling. Watch their shadows on the ground to predict where they'll land.
- Navigate this treacherous path, collecting beads and defeating any Ice Guys.
- Near the end of this section, just before the final door, there's a series of small, icy platforms leading upwards.
- At the very top of these platforms, a Winged Cloud is hovering. Hit it to get the Fifth Smiley Flower.
- Stamp Patch 11, 12, & 13: The falling icicle section is quite long and bead-dense. Be patient and collect everything.
- Fifth Wonder Wool (Boss Prep Area):
- Just before the large door leading to the boss arena, there's a small alcove above the door.
- Jump and flutter into this alcove. Inside, you'll find the Fifth Wonder Wool.
- Important: stock up on yarn balls from the nearby Yarn Basket before entering the boss door! You'll need them for the upcoming fight.
- Stamp Patch 14 & 15: The final stretch before the boss door, including the alcove, should provide the last few beads for these patches.
Boss Battle: Kamek
Kamek is a recurring nuisance, and in his own fortress, he's ready for a proper fight. This battle takes place on a series of icy platforms. Kamek has a few distinct attack patterns:
- Magic Blasts: Kamek will shoot purple magic blasts that can turn platforms into enemies, or enemies into blocks. Dodge these.
- Enemy Summon: He'll frequently summon various enemies, including Shy Guys and Ice Guys, to distract you. These enemies can also be eaten to replenish your yarn supply.
- Platform Manipulation: Kamek will often use his magic to make platforms disappear or appear, changing the battlefield. Be ready to adjust your position quickly.
- Ice Spikes: Occasionally, Kamek will conjure large ice spikes from the ground. Watch for shadows to anticipate their location.
Strategy:
- Yarn Ball Barrage: Kamek is vulnerable to yarn balls. Your primary goal is to hit him whenever he's exposed. He'll typically hover in place for a moment after an attack, providing a window. Aim for his head or body.
- Dodge and Weave: The icy platforms make dodging tricky. Use short hops and flutter jumps to maintain control and avoid his magic blasts, summoned enemies, and ice spikes. Keep moving!
- Utilize Enemies: If you run low on yarn, eat the enemies Kamek summons to replenish your supply. This is crucial for maintaining your offense.
- Patience is Key: Don't rush. Wait for clear shots and prioritize dodging. Kamek will take several hits to defeat. He will flash red and briefly disappear after each successful hit.
- Platform Awareness: Always be aware of the platforms. Kamek will destroy or create them, potentially leaving you stranded or giving you a new vantage point.
Once Kamek is defeated, the level is complete! Congratulations on clearing Kamek's Icy Fortress!
Common Pitfalls & Tips
- Slippery Surfaces: The ice is your biggest enemy here. Practice short, controlled jumps rather than long slides. Flutter jumps are invaluable for correcting trajectory and extending jumps over gaps.
- Kamek's Magic: Pay attention to Kamek's magic blasts. They can turn solid ground into a dangerous enemy or create temporary platforms you need to use. Sometimes, Kamek will transform a regular Shy Guy into an Ice Guy, or even a larger enemy.
- Hidden Clouds: Many collectibles are hidden in invisible Winged Clouds. Keep an eye out for suspicious empty spaces, areas that seem unusually quiet, or try throwing yarn balls randomly in areas that feel "empty" or have a slight shimmer.
- Yarn Ball Management: Always keep a good stock of yarn balls. Eat enemies to replenish your supply, especially before the boss fight. The Yarn Basket before the boss is your last chance to stock up.
- Bead Collection: Don't forget the Stamp Patches! They are earned every time you collect 100 beads. Explore every nook and cranny, defeat all enemies, and break any suspicious blocks to maximize your bead count.
