Gaining experience points (EXP) is crucial for leveling up Link's stats. While you'll naturally gain EXP by defeating enemies, certain areas offer more efficient grinding opportunities. Early in the game, the overworld around Parapa Palace and Midoro Swamp can be good for accumulating initial levels. Look for areas with high concentrations of Moblins, Octoroks, and Goriya. Later, the caves leading to Death Mountain and the areas around the Maze Island Palace often feature stronger enemies like Iron Knuckles and Wizzrobes, which yield significantly more EXP. A particularly good spot is often a screen with a continuous spawn of high-value enemies that can be quickly defeated, such as a room with two Red Iron Knuckles that respawn when you exit and re-enter. Identify these 'farming' spots and spend some time there to boost your levels, especially before tackling a new palace or a difficult boss. Remember to save frequently after gaining significant EXP.

While Zelda II utilizes a traditional experience system, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening simplified progression by removing level-ups entirely in favor of heart pieces and equipment upgrades.
While Zelda II rewards repetitive combat for stat growth, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass replaces traditional experience points with Spirit Gems to enhance Link’s specific elemental abilities.
