Story and Lore
Welcome, brave adventurer! Before you embark on the perilous journey that is Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, understanding the rich tapestry of its lore and the unfolding narrative is crucial. This isn't just a hack-and-slash; it's a quest steeped in ancient magic, royal lineage, and the ever-present threat of Ganon's return. Prepare yourself, for the fate of Hyrule rests on your shoulders.
The Legend of the Sleeping Princess
Our tale begins six years after the events of the original The Legend of Zelda. Link, now a seasoned hero, bears the mark of the Triforce on his hand. One day, a strange symbol appears on the back of his left hand, mirroring the Triforce. Impa, Princess Zelda's nursemaid, recognizes this as a sign of a grave prophecy. She leads Link to a secluded chamber within North Castle, where a sleeping Princess Zelda lies under a powerful enchantment.
- The Curse: Impa reveals that a long-forgotten Princess Zelda, from generations past, was cursed into an eternal slumber by a wicked magician who sought to force her to reveal the location of the Triforce of Courage. When she refused, the magician retaliated, and the King, in his grief, decreed that all princesses born into the royal family would be named Zelda to honor her.
- The Triforce of Courage: This is the missing piece of the legendary Triforce, hidden away by the ancient King of Hyrule. It is said to be the key to awakening the sleeping princess and restoring balance to the land.
Link's Grand Quest: Awakening Zelda
Impa instructs Link that to break the spell, he must find the Triforce of Courage. This involves a perilous journey across Hyrule, collecting six crystals, and placing them in six palaces. These crystals are not merely trinkets; they are imbued with ancient power and serve as keys to unlocking the path to the Triforce of Courage.
Initial Steps and First Palace
Your journey begins immediately after speaking with Impa in North Castle. Your first objective is to locate the first crystal and place it in Parapa Palace.
- Leave North Castle: Head east from North Castle. You'll encounter your first enemies on the overworld map. Remember to practice your sword techniques (Upward and Downward Thrusts are vital!) as you travel.
- Rauru Town: Your first stop should be Rauru Town, located southeast of North Castle. Here, you can speak with villagers to gather information and replenish your health at the Elder's house.
- Obtain the Candle: To navigate the dark caves leading to Parapa Palace, you'll need the Candle.
- Location: The Candle is found within a cave directly east of Rauru Town.
- Strategy: The cave is straightforward, but watch out for Bubbles and Bots. The Candle is typically found in a chest at the end of the cave.
- Journey to Parapa Desert: With the Candle in hand, head south from Rauru Town. You'll soon enter the Parapa Desert region. Be wary of the desert's unique enemies, such as the Moblins and the elusive Goriya.
- Locate Parapa Palace: Parapa Palace is situated within the Parapa Desert. It's a distinct, dark structure on the overworld map.
- Conquer Parapa Palace:
- Key Item: Inside Parapa Palace, your primary goal is to find the Magic Key. This key will unlock the path to the palace's boss.
- Boss: The boss of Parapa Palace is the Horsehead.
- Strategy: Horsehead is a formidable foe. He attacks with his axe and can jump. The key to defeating him is to use your Downward Thrust attack when he jumps, hitting his head. Be patient and dodge his axe swings.
- Crystal Placement: After defeating Horsehead, you will find the first crystal. Place it on the altar within the palace to complete this segment of your quest.
With the first crystal in place, the path to the Triforce of Courage slowly begins to reveal itself. Your journey is long, Link, but the fate of Hyrule and Princess Zelda depends on your unwavering courage!
