Inventory Management
Unlike its predecessor, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link introduces a more robust inventory system, requiring Link to actively manage his collected items and spells. Understanding how to effectively use your inventory is crucial for survival and progression through Hyrule. This section will detail the various items, their uses, and strategic advice for their deployment.
Accessing Your Inventory
To access Link's inventory, press the START button. This will pause the game and bring up a menu with several options:
- ITEM: This tab displays all the permanent and consumable items Link has collected.
- MAGIC: This tab shows the spells Link has learned and allows you to select which one is currently active.
- STATS: This tab provides an overview of Link's current Attack, Magic, and Life levels, along with his current experience points (EXP) and the EXP needed for the next level-up.
Key Items and Their Acquisition
These are permanent items essential for progression, often found in palaces or given by NPCs.
- Candle: Obtained in Parapa Palace. Essential for illuminating dark caves and palaces, allowing you to see enemies and pathways. Without it, many areas are impassable.
- Glove: Found in the cave west of Death Mountain. This item allows Link to break certain blocks with his sword, opening new paths and revealing hidden secrets.
- Raft: Located in the Water Town of Saria. The Raft is vital for crossing large bodies of water, such as the sea separating the East and West Hyrule continents.
- Boots: Discovered in the King's Tomb, north of the Great Palace. These special boots allow Link to walk on water, providing access to otherwise unreachable islands and areas.
- Cross: Found in the Hidden Town of Mido. The Cross reveals invisible enemies, particularly the elusive Moblins and other spectral foes, making combat significantly easier in certain areas.
- Magic Key: The ultimate key, found in the Great Palace. This key can open any locked door in the game, making all previous small keys obsolete and simplifying navigation.
Consumable Items and Strategic Use
These items are temporary and disappear after use. Careful management can make the difference between success and a Game Over.
- P-Bag (Pouch): These bags contain varying amounts of P-Points (experience). They are dropped by defeated enemies or found in treasure chests. Collect them to level up Link's stats. Prioritize collecting these, especially early on, to boost your Attack, Magic, and Life.
- 1-Up Doll: Grants Link an extra life. These are rare and incredibly valuable. You can find one in a hidden cave near the starting area (east of Rauru Town, cut down the forest square) and another in a house in Darunia. Save these for challenging areas like the Great Palace.
- Magic Jar: Replenishes Link's magic meter. Small jars restore a small amount, while large jars restore a significant portion. These are frequently dropped by enemies. Always keep an eye on your magic meter and grab these when available, especially if you rely heavily on spells like Shield or Jump.
- Life Jar: Restores Link's health. Similar to Magic Jars, these come in small and large varieties. They are less common than Magic Jars but crucial for extending your survival. Prioritize collecting these if your health is low, particularly before entering a boss fight or a new palace.
- Water of Life: A rare and powerful healing item that fully restores Link's health and magic. These are typically found in specific locations, such as the cave leading to Death Mountain (after using the Hammer). Save these for emergencies or before tackling the toughest challenges.
Spell Management
Spells are essential for combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving. You can only have one spell selected at a time.
- Shield: Reduces damage taken. Crucial for boss fights and areas with strong enemies. Cast it before engaging tough foes.
- Jump: Increases Link's jump height. Necessary for reaching high platforms and bypassing obstacles. Essential for navigating several palaces, especially the Palace on the Sea.
- Life: Restores some of Link's health. A vital emergency heal, but consumes a fair amount of magic. Use it when Life Jars are scarce.
- Fairy: Transforms Link into a fairy, allowing him to fly over enemies and through small gaps. Useful for avoiding combat or reaching hidden areas. Found in the Town of Mido.
- Fire: Shoots a fireball. A powerful offensive spell, especially against enemies with shields or those that are hard to hit with the sword. Learned in the Town of Darunia.
- Reflect: Creates a shield that reflects projectiles. Invaluable against magic-casting enemies like Wizzrobes. Acquired in the Town of Nabooru.
- Spell: A unique spell that reveals hidden clues or weaknesses. Its effect varies depending on the context. Found in the Town of Old Kasuto.
- Thunder: The most powerful offensive spell, dealing massive damage to all enemies on screen. Extremely costly in magic, so reserve it for dire situations or tough boss encounters. Learned in the Hidden Town of New Kasuto.
Strategy Tip: Always keep an eye on your magic meter. If you're low on magic, prioritize finding Magic Jars or using the Life spell sparingly. Certain spells, like Jump, are often required for specific platforming sections, so ensure you have enough magic before attempting them.
