Finding the Magic Key
The Magic Key is arguably the most crucial item in your quest, as it grants you access to every locked door in Hyrule, eliminating the need for individual small keys. Obtaining it requires significant progress and a journey through some of the game's most challenging areas. Prepare for a lengthy expedition!
Prerequisites
Before you can even *think* about acquiring the Magic Key, ensure you have the following essential spells and items:
- Jump Spell: Absolutely vital for navigating the Great Palace.
- Fairy Spell: Provides invincibility and allows passage through small openings, crucial for a specific part of the Great Palace.
- Thunder Spell: Necessary to defeat the final boss of the Great Palace.
- Cross: Reveals hidden enemies and passages, invaluable in the Great Palace.
- Hammer: Required to smash rocks blocking paths on the overworld.
- Glove: Allows you to break blocks with your sword, essential for reaching the Great Palace.
- Boots: Enables walking on water, necessary to reach the Great Palace.
Ensure your Attack, Magic, and Life levels are sufficiently high. We recommend at least Level 7 for all three, though Level 8 or even 9 will make the final dungeon significantly more manageable.
Journey to the Great Palace
The Magic Key is found within the Great Palace, the final and most formidable dungeon in Zelda II. Reaching it is a quest in itself:
- Retrieve the Hammer: If you haven't already, obtain the Hammer from the Death Mountain dungeon. This allows you to clear the path to the Eastern Palace.
- Obtain the Boots: After acquiring the Hammer, head east from Death Mountain. Use the Hammer to clear the rocks blocking the path to the Water Town of Saria. Speak to the wise man there to receive the Boots, allowing you to walk on water.
- Find the Glove: With the Boots, you can now cross the sea to the east and reach the Maze Island. Navigate the maze to find the Hidden Town of Mido. Inside, a wise man will grant you the Glove.
- Locate the Great Palace Entrance: From Mido, travel north and then west across the water. You'll eventually reach a large, rocky area. Use your Hammer to clear the rocks, revealing the entrance to the Great Palace.
Navigating the Great Palace
The Great Palace is a sprawling, multi-layered dungeon filled with the game's toughest enemies and most intricate puzzles. Take your time, conserve your magic, and be prepared for a challenge.
- Initial Entry: Upon entering, you'll face several Iron Knuckles and Wizzrobes. Prioritize defeating the Wizzrobes with your sword or the Jump/Downthrust combination.
- First Fairy Passage: Early in the palace, you'll encounter a section with small openings. Use your Fairy Spell to shrink Link and pass through these gaps. This is crucial for progression.
- Hidden Passages: Remember to use your Cross frequently. The Great Palace is notorious for its hidden blocks and false walls that conceal pathways and vital items. Slash at suspicious walls or blocks to reveal secrets.
- Elevator Rooms: Many rooms feature moving platforms and elevators. Master the timing of your jumps, especially with the Jump Spell, to navigate these sections without falling into pits.
- Darknut Gauntlet: You will encounter numerous Darknuts. Remember their weak point: their head. Use the Downthrust or carefully timed horizontal slashes when they turn.
- The Magic Key's Location: The Magic Key is not a boss reward. It's found in a specific room towards the latter half of the palace. Look for a room with multiple platforms and a distinct layout that suggests a hidden path. Often, it's behind a seemingly solid wall that can be broken with your sword (thanks to the Glove) or revealed by the Cross. The exact location can vary slightly depending on the specific palace layout you encounter, so thorough exploration and liberal use of the Cross are your best friends here.
Once you acquire the Magic Key, a triumphant jingle will play, and it will be added to your inventory. From this point forward, all locked doors in any palace or dungeon will open automatically as you approach them, making your journey significantly smoother. However, your ultimate quest to defeat the Darknut and awaken Princess Zelda still lies ahead!
