Post-Game Challenges / New Game+
Congratulations, hero! You've awoken Princess Zelda and restored peace to Hyrule. But for the most dedicated adventurers, the journey doesn't truly end there. Zelda II, while not featuring a traditional "New Game+" mode with carried-over stats, offers a unique set of post-game challenges that will test your mastery of Link's abilities and the game's intricate world. These challenges are designed for players who have fully explored Hyrule, collected all items, and perfected their combat techniques.
The Ultimate Gauntlet: Palace Reruns
While you can't revisit palaces in the same way you explore the overworld, the true post-game challenge lies in attempting a "perfect run" through the game's most difficult areas. This means minimizing damage, utilizing every spell and item strategically, and achieving the highest possible score. Here's how to approach it:
- No Damage Runs: Choose a particularly challenging palace, such as the Great Palace or the Maze Island Palace. The goal is to complete it without taking a single hit. This requires impeccable timing for your Upward and Downward Thrusts, precise jumping, and expert use of the Shield spell.
- Magic Conservation: Attempt to clear palaces using the absolute minimum amount of magic. This means relying more on your sword skills and knowing exactly when to deploy spells like Jump or Shield for maximum effect. The Life spell should be a last resort.
- Boss Rush (Mental Challenge): While not an in-game feature, challenge yourself to defeat all palace bosses in a row, without dying, on a fresh save file. This demands intimate knowledge of each boss's patterns, from the Horsehead to the Darknut and finally, Dark Link.
Item Scavenger Hunt (New Save File)
For those who enjoy efficiency and optimization, a post-game challenge can involve starting a new game and attempting to collect all essential items and upgrades in the fastest possible time, or in a specific, non-linear order. This requires meticulous planning and knowledge of the game's sequence breaks.
- Early Magic Container Acquisition:
- Heart Container 1 (Death Mountain): After obtaining the Candle from the cave north of the starting point, immediately head to Death Mountain. Navigate the treacherous caves to reach the first Heart Container.
- Magic Container 1 (Rauru Town): Once you have the Hammer from Death Mountain, break the rock blocking the path to Rauru Town. Speak to the wise man to receive the first Magic Container.
- Magic Container 2 (Mido Town): Acquire the Boots from the Water Town of Saria. Then, head to Mido Town and speak to the wise man for the second Magic Container.
- Sword Skills First: Prioritize learning the Downward Thrust and Upward Thrust as early as possible.
- Downward Thrust: Obtain the Glove from the cave in the forest west of the starting point. Then, head to the town of Ruto and speak to the wise man.
- Upward Thrust: After acquiring the Raft from the King's Tomb, sail to the eastern continent. Head to the town of Darunia and speak to the wise man.
The "Minimalist" Run
This is arguably the most difficult post-game challenge. Start a new game and aim to complete it with the fewest possible upgrades to your Attack, Magic, and Life stats. This will force you to rely heavily on your skill and knowledge of enemy patterns.
- No Level-Ups: Avoid collecting experience points whenever possible. This means dodging enemies on the overworld and carefully navigating palaces to avoid unnecessary combat. If combat is unavoidable, try to minimize the experience gained.
- Limited Magic: Restrict your use of magic to only absolutely necessary situations. This will make boss battles and difficult enemy encounters significantly harder, as you won't have the luxury of spamming spells like Shield or Jump.
- No Extra Lives: While not directly controllable, aim to complete the game without losing all your lives. This means every death is a setback, and careful play is paramount.
These challenges offer a fresh perspective on Zelda II, pushing your skills to their absolute limit and proving your true mastery of the Hyrulean hero.
