Hidden Areas and Secrets
Zelda II is notorious for its challenging difficulty, but also for its cleverly hidden secrets and beneficial power-ups. Uncovering these can significantly ease your journey through Hyrule. This section details some of the most crucial and well-concealed areas and items that often go unnoticed by first-time adventurers.
The Hidden Town of Mido's Cave
While not a "town" in the traditional sense, this secret area provides a vital item early in your quest.
- Location: Directly west of the town of Rauru, across a small bridge. You'll notice a small cave entrance on the overworld map.
- Requirements: No special items are needed to enter, but be prepared for a few basic enemy encounters inside.
- Walkthrough:
- From Rauru, head west and cross the bridge.
- Locate the cave entrance on the overworld.
- Enter the cave. Inside, navigate through the short, enemy-filled passage. You'll encounter a few Moblins and Goriya.
- At the end of the cave, you'll find a wise old man. Speak to him, and he will teach you the Jump Spell.
- Significance: The Jump Spell is indispensable for reaching higher platforms, bypassing certain obstacles, and even finding other secrets. It significantly enhances Link's mobility.
The Magic Container in Spectacle Rock
This early-game Magic Container is easily missed but provides a crucial boost to your magic meter.
- Location: Spectacle Rock, the prominent rock formation north of the Death Mountain entrance.
- Requirements: The Jump Spell is highly recommended, though skilled players might manage without it by using precise jumps.
- Walkthrough:
- Travel to Spectacle Rock on the overworld map.
- Enter the side-scrolling area.
- You'll notice two distinct rock formations that resemble eyeglasses. The Magic Container is hidden on the upper "lens" of the right-hand rock formation.
- Use the Jump Spell to reach the higher platform on the right.
- Once on the platform, walk to the rightmost edge. You'll find the Magic Container waiting for you.
- Significance: An extra Magic Container allows you to cast more spells, which is invaluable for both combat and exploration, especially with the newly acquired Jump Spell.
The Life Upgrade in the Hidden Palace of the King
A well-guarded secret, this Life Upgrade can make a significant difference in your survivability.
- Location: Within the King's Tomb, located in the Valley of Death, west of the town of Saria.
- Requirements: You must have acquired the Hammer from the Midoro Swamp palace to break the rock blocking the path to the King's Tomb.
- Walkthrough:
- After obtaining the Hammer, head west from Saria into the Valley of Death.
- Use the Hammer on the large rock formation blocking the path to the King's Tomb.
- Enter the King's Tomb. Navigate through the initial screens, which contain a few enemies like Iron Knuckles.
- You will eventually reach a room with a statue of the King. Instead of proceeding directly to the next screen, perform a downward thrust with your sword on the statue.
- The statue will move, revealing a hidden passage.
- Enter the passage to find a Life Upgrade.
- Significance: This Life Upgrade permanently increases your maximum HP, making Link much more resilient against the tough enemies and bosses ahead.
The Fairy in the Graveyard
A quick and easy way to restore your health and magic in a pinch.
- Location: The graveyard area directly east of the town of Rauru.
- Requirements: None.
- Walkthrough:
- From Rauru, head east onto the overworld map.
- Enter the graveyard area.
- Walk to the far right side of the graveyard screen.
- Stand on the last grave and perform a downward thrust.
- A Fairy will appear, restoring all of Link's HP and MP.
- Significance: This is a repeatable secret, meaning you can return to this spot anytime you need a full heal. It's particularly useful before entering Parapa Palace or if you're struggling with the enemies in the surrounding areas.
