Fog of War Strategies
Fog of War (FoW) missions fundamentally change the tactical landscape of Advance Wars. Instead of a clear overview, your vision is limited to a small radius around your units, making reconnaissance and cautious advancement paramount. Mastering FoW is crucial for success, especially in later campaign missions and Versus Mode.
I. Core Principles of Fog of War
- Limited Vision: Units can only see a few squares around them. Infantry and Mechs have a vision range of 2 squares, while most vehicles (Tanks, APCs, Artillery, etc.) have a vision range of 3 squares. Air units (Fighters, Bombers, Helicopters) generally have a wider vision range (5 squares for Fighters/Bombers, 3 for Copters). Submarines have 5 vision squares when submerged, but only 1 when surfaced.
- Surprise Attacks: The enemy can hide powerful units just outside your vision range, setting up devastating ambushes. Conversely, you can use FoW to your advantage to surprise the AI.
- Terrain Matters: Woods and Reefs provide a crucial defensive bonus and, more importantly, allow units to hide from enemy sight even if they are within their vision range. This makes them invaluable for ambushes and reconnaissance.
II. Essential Units for Fog of War
- Infantry/Mechs:
- Role: Your primary scouts and capturers. Their low cost makes them expendable for probing enemy positions.
- Strategy: Send them into Woods and Mountains to gain vision and reveal enemy units. They are excellent for spotting hidden Artillery or Rockets before they can fire. Use them to capture properties under the cover of FoW.
- Tip: Always move Infantry into terrain that provides defensive bonuses (Woods, Mountains, Cities) if possible, especially when scouting.
- Recon:
- Role: Fast, mobile scouts with a good vision range (3 squares).
- Strategy: Ideal for quickly exploring large areas and revealing enemy positions. Use their speed to dart into enemy territory, reveal units, and retreat if necessary. They are also decent at finishing off weakened Infantry.
- Caution: Recons are fragile. Do not leave them exposed to direct combat with Tanks or other heavy units.
- Artillery/Rockets:
- Role: Indirect fire units are incredibly powerful in FoW, as they can attack units without being seen, provided another unit spots the target.
- Strategy: Position them behind your front lines, in Woods if possible, and use Infantry or Recons to spot targets. This allows you to chip away at the enemy without risking your direct combat units.
- Key: Always pair indirect fire with a spotter unit. Without vision, they are useless.
- Submarines:
- Role: Naval reconnaissance and stealth attacks.
- Strategy: Submerge them immediately. Their 5-square vision range when submerged is unmatched at sea. Use them to scout enemy naval movements and ambush vulnerable Transports or Cruisers.
- Caution: Surfacing a Submarine makes it visible and vulnerable. Only surface to attack or resupply.
- Tanks/Medium Tanks:
- Role: Your main combat units.
- Strategy: Advance cautiously, always keeping a scout unit (Infantry, Recon) ahead to reveal threats. Avoid moving them into areas where they could be ambushed by multiple enemy units. Use their 3-square vision to your advantage when pushing through open terrain.
III. Advanced Fog of War Tactics
- The "Leapfrog" Advance:
- Description: A methodical advance where you move one unit forward to reveal terrain, then move another unit (often a combat unit) into the newly revealed safe zone, ensuring you never move blindly.
- Walkthrough:
- Move an Infantry unit into a Wood tile.
- Observe the revealed area. If no immediate threats, move a Tank or Mech into a defensive position (e.g., another Wood or City tile) within the newly revealed zone.
- Repeat, always using a scout to clear the path for your heavier units.
- Ambushes from Woods/Reefs:
- Description: Position powerful units (Tanks, Medium Tanks, Anti-Air, Cruisers, Submarines) in terrain that grants both defensive bonuses and concealment (Woods for land, Reefs for sea).
- Strategy: Wait for an unsuspecting enemy unit to enter your attack range, then unleash a surprise attack. This is particularly effective against units with limited counter-attack options or those that are already damaged.
- Example: Hiding a Medium Tank in a Wood tile adjacent to a road. When an enemy Tank drives by, attack it from the safety of the Woods.
- "Bait and Switch" Maneuver:
- Description: Intentionally expose a less valuable unit (e.g., a damaged Infantry or a Recon) to draw out enemy units, then ambush them with hidden, stronger units.
- Strategy: Place the "bait" unit just within the enemy's likely movement range. Ensure your hidden ambush units (e.g., Artillery, Tanks in Woods) are ready to strike the moment the enemy reveals themselves.
- Countering Hidden Indirect Fire:
- Problem: The enemy has hidden Artillery/Rockets firing at your units.
- Solution:
- Identify Source: Pay attention to the direction of incoming fire.
- Scout Aggressively: Send fast scouts (Recons, Infantry) into the suspected areas, prioritizing Woods and Mountains.
- Flank and Destroy: Once located, use fast units (Tanks, Medium Tanks, Copters) to quickly close the distance and eliminate the vulnerable indirect fire units.
- Air Unit Reconnaissance:
- Role: Fighters and Bombers have excellent vision ranges (5 squares), making them superb for revealing large swathes of the map.
- Strategy: Use them to quickly uncover enemy base locations, unit concentrations, and capture points. However, be wary of enemy Anti-Air or Fighters.
- Tip: A single Fighter can be an invaluable early-game scout, but ensure it doesn't fly into a trap.
IV. General Tips for Fog of War
- Move Last, Attack First: In FoW, it's often better to move your units to reveal the enemy, then use other units to attack. Avoid moving a unit, then immediately attacking with it if it reveals a new, stronger threat.
- Conserve Fuel: Units like Bombers and Fighters consume fuel rapidly. Plan your reconnaissance routes carefully to avoid running out of fuel over enemy territory. APCs and T-Copters can resupply ground units.
- CO Powers: Some COs have powers that are particularly effective in FoW. For example, Sami's Double Time can make her Infantry incredibly fast scouts and capturers, while Max's direct combat bonus makes his units even more dangerous in ambushes. Consider your CO's strengths when planning FoW strategies.
- Save Often: Especially in challenging FoW missions, saving at key turns allows you to experiment with different scouting paths and react to unexpected enemy placements without restarting the entire mission.
