Map Control & Positioning

Mastering map control and unit positioning is paramount to success in Advance Wars. It's not just about destroying enemy units; it's about dictating the flow of battle, securing vital resources, and minimizing your own losses. Think of the map as a chess board, and every move has long-term implications.

Securing Properties: The Economic Backbone

Properties are your lifeblood. Capturing cities, factories, and airports provides the financial resources to build new units and repair damaged ones. Early game property control is often the deciding factor in who gains the economic advantage.

  • Initial Rush: On most maps, immediately deploy Infantry or Mechs from your HQ to capture nearby neutral Cities. Prioritize those that are strategically located or offer a quicker path to your income generation.
  • Chokepoint Cities: Identify Cities that lie on critical chokepoints (e.g., bridges, mountain passes). Securing these not only boosts your income but also denies the enemy a safe capture point and provides defensive terrain bonuses.
  • Forward Bases: Once you've pushed into enemy territory, capturing a neutral Factory or Airport can significantly shorten deployment times for new units, allowing you to reinforce the front lines more quickly.

Terrain Advantage: Your Best Defense

Every tile on the map offers unique defensive bonuses or movement penalties. Understanding and utilizing these is crucial for effective positioning.

  • Defense Stars:
    • Mountains (3-4 Stars): Excellent for defensive units like Rockets or Artillery, providing high defense and often vision over large areas. However, movement is severely restricted for most ground units.
    • Forests (2 Stars): Ideal for hiding units (especially Infantry and Recons) from enemy sight, while still offering a good defensive bonus. Infantry and Mechs move well through forests.
    • Cities (3 Stars): Provide strong defense and heal units. Essential for holding ground and repairing damaged units.
    • Bases/HQs (4 Stars): The strongest defensive tiles, also heal units. Your HQ is your most critical property to defend.
  • Movement Penalties:
    • Roads: Offer no defensive bonus but allow for rapid movement for all ground units. Use them to quickly redeploy or launch offensives.
    • Rivers/Shoals: Impede movement for most ground units. Use Bridges to cross efficiently, or deploy Naval units for water control.
    • Rough Terrain (e.g., Plains): Offer minimal defensive bonuses (1 Star) and moderate movement costs. Avoid engaging in open plains if possible, unless you have a significant unit advantage.
  • Vision Blocking: Mountains and Forests block line of sight for most units. Use this to your advantage to set up ambushes or conceal troop movements. Recon units and some COs (like Sami) can see further into these terrains.

Forming Defensive Lines & Offensive Pushes

Effective positioning involves creating strong defensive lines and launching coordinated offensive pushes.

  • "Meat Shield" Strategy: Place high-HP, low-cost units like Infantry or Mechs on the front lines, particularly on strong defensive terrain (Cities, Forests). These units can absorb damage, protecting more valuable, but fragile, units behind them.
  • Artillery/Rocket Placement: Position indirect fire units (Artillery, Rockets, Missiles) 2-3 squares behind your front line, ideally on terrain with defensive bonuses. This allows them to attack enemy units without being vulnerable to direct counter-attacks. Ensure they have clear lines of fire.
  • Anti-Air Coverage: If the enemy has air units, keep Anti-Air or Missiles near your valuable ground units and indirect fire units. Tanks and Medium Tanks can also provide some anti-air capability.
  • Flanking Maneuvers: Use fast units like Recons, Tanks, or Bikes to bypass enemy defensive lines and attack their vulnerable indirect fire units or capturing Infantry. This requires careful timing and map awareness.
  • CO Power Synergy: Remember your CO's unique abilities. For example, Olaf's "Blizzard" can freeze enemy movement, allowing you to reposition defensively or launch a devastating offensive. Max's "Max Force" boosts direct combat units, making him ideal for a frontal assault.

By consistently applying these principles of map control and positioning, you will significantly improve your tactical prowess and lead your army to victory in Advance Wars.
