Defensive Structures & Fortifications

Effective defense is paramount to securing your economy, protecting your Wonders, and ultimately achieving victory in Age of Empires IV. This section details the various defensive structures available, their strategic placement, and how to best utilize them against enemy incursions.

Early Game Defenses (Dark Age & Feudal Age)

In the early stages of the game, your defensive options are limited but crucial for deterring early rushes and protecting vital resources.

  • Palisade Walls:
    • Cost: Low wood cost per segment.
    • Purpose: These are your earliest and cheapest defensive structures. While easily destroyed by even basic military units, they serve as an excellent deterrent against early scout harassment and slow down enemy rushes, giving you time to react.
    • Strategy:
      • Enclose your primary resource collection points (berry bushes, gold mines, stone deposits) and your Town Center.
      • Use them to funnel enemy units into chokepoints where your villagers or early military units can engage them more effectively.
      • Repair them constantly during an attack using nearby villagers.
  • Outposts (Watch Towers):
    • Cost: Wood and Stone.
    • Purpose: Outposts provide vision and can fire arrows at approaching enemies. They are invaluable for early warning and can significantly damage light units.
    • Strategy:
      • Place them strategically around your base, especially near resource nodes and potential enemy approach paths.
      • Upgrade them to Stone Wall Towers in the Feudal Age for increased durability and attack power.
      • Garrison villagers inside for increased arrow output, especially during an attack. This also protects the villagers.

Mid-Game Fortifications (Castle Age)

As you advance to the Castle Age, your defensive capabilities expand significantly, allowing for more robust and long-lasting fortifications.

  • Stone Walls:
    • Cost: High stone cost per segment.
    • Purpose: The backbone of any strong defense. Stone Walls are incredibly durable and can withstand sustained attacks from most units and even early siege weapons.
    • Strategy:
      • Completely wall off your main base, creating a secure perimeter.
      • Utilize natural chokepoints on the map to reduce the amount of walling required.
      • Build multiple layers of walls in critical areas to create a deeper defense.
      • Connect them to Keeps and Gatehouses for maximum effectiveness.
  • Keeps:
    • Cost: High stone and gold cost.
    • Purpose: Keeps are powerful defensive structures that deal significant damage to enemy units and provide a large line of sight. They also act as a mini-Town Center, allowing for unit production and research of defensive upgrades.
    • Strategy:
      • Place Keeps at strategic chokepoints, critical resource locations, or as a forward defensive position to control map territory.
      • Upgrade them with technologies like Boiling Oil (increases damage to melee units attacking the Keep) and Embrasures (increases arrow slots).
      • Garrison archers or crossbowmen inside for devastating ranged attacks.
  • Gatehouses:
    • Cost: Stone.
    • Purpose: Allows your units to pass through Stone Walls while keeping enemies out.
    • Strategy:
      • Integrate Gatehouses into your Stone Wall lines at key entry and exit points.
      • Always ensure Gatehouses are closed when not in use to prevent enemy infiltration.
      • Consider placing a Keep or Outpost directly behind a Gatehouse for added protection.

Late Game Defenses (Imperial Age)

In the Imperial Age, your defenses should be nearly impenetrable, designed to withstand powerful siege assaults and late-game armies.

  • Bombard Towers:
    • Cost: High stone and gold cost, requires Chemistry research.
    • Purpose: These advanced towers fire powerful cannonballs, dealing massive damage to all unit types, especially siege engines and armored units.
    • Strategy:
      • Place Bombard Towers strategically to cover key approach routes and protect your Keeps and Wonders.
      • Their long range makes them excellent for area denial.
      • Combine them with Stone Walls and Keeps to create a formidable defensive line.
  • Siege Workshops (Defensive Use):
    • Cost: Wood and Gold.
    • Purpose: While primarily offensive, Siege Workshops can be used defensively to produce defensive siege units like Springalds and Mangonels to counter enemy siege.
    • Strategy:
      • Keep a few Springalds near your main defensive lines to quickly dismantle enemy trebuchets and bombards.
      • Mangonels can be effective against massed infantry pushes at chokepoints.

General Defensive Strategies

  • Layered Defense: Don't rely on a single line of defense. Create multiple layers of walls, Keeps, and towers to absorb damage and slow down attackers.
  • Chokepoints: Utilize the natural terrain to your advantage. Funnel enemies into narrow passages where your defenses can concentrate fire.
  • Repair and Reinforce: Always have villagers ready to repair damaged structures during an attack. Reinforce threatened areas with military units.
  • Vision is Key: Good map vision from Outposts and Keeps allows you to anticipate attacks and position your defenses accordingly.
  • Economic Protection: Prioritize defending your resource gatherers and economic buildings. A crippled economy means no army to defend with.
