Building & City Upgrades
Mastering your city's development is paramount to success in Age of Wonders 4. Strategic building and timely upgrades can provide crucial economic, military, and magical advantages. This section will guide you through optimizing your urban centers.
Core City Structures
Every city begins with a basic set of structures. Understanding their purpose and upgrade paths is your first step:
- City Hall: The heart of your city. Upgrading your City Hall to a Town Hall, then a Grand City Hall, and finally a Royal Palace, increases your city's population cap, provides additional building slots, and often unlocks higher-tier economic or military structures. Prioritize these upgrades as your population grows.
- Farm: Essential for food production, which fuels population growth. Early game, building several farms is crucial to rapidly expand your workforce. Consider upgrading to a Granary for increased output and potentially a food-based bonus.
- Mine: Provides production, necessary for constructing buildings and units. Locating cities near rich mineral deposits (indicated by ore veins on the world map) will significantly boost your early game production. Upgrade to a Deep Mine for enhanced output.
- Quarry: Similar to Mines, Quarries provide production, often from stone deposits. Upgrading to a Stone Works further improves production.
- Watchtower: Improves vision range around your city, crucial for spotting approaching enemies or valuable resource nodes. Upgrading to a Guard Tower then a Fortress provides defensive bonuses to your city's walls and garrison.
Economic & Resource Buildings
These structures are vital for sustaining your empire and funding your military endeavors. Their placement and upgrade priority will depend on your chosen affinity and playstyle.
- Marketplace: Generates Gold, the universal currency. Upgrading to a Grand Market significantly boosts income and can unlock trade routes with allied factions. Early investment in Marketplaces can provide a strong economic foundation.
- Research Post: Essential for generating Knowledge, which unlocks new spells, units, and city upgrades. Upgrading to a Library, then an Academy, and finally a University, dramatically increases your research output. For a knowledge-focused victory, these are top priority.
- Mana Conduit: Produces Mana, required for casting spells and maintaining magical units. Upgrading to a Mana Well and then a Mana Nexus will be critical for any magic-heavy strategy. Consider building these near magical resource nodes for amplified effects.
- Forge: Boosts production and can unlock specific unit upgrades or item crafting options depending on your culture. Upgrading to a Great Forge is recommended for military-focused empires.
- Lumber Mill: Provides additional production from forested areas. Upgrade to a Sawmill for improved output.
Military & Defensive Structures
Protecting your cities and projecting your power requires a robust military infrastructure.
- Barracks: Allows the recruitment of basic military units. Upgrading to an Armory, then a Training Grounds, and finally a War College, unlocks higher-tier units and provides combat bonuses to newly recruited units.
- Walls: Provides a significant defensive bonus to your city, making it harder for enemies to conquer. Upgrading from Wooden Walls to Stone Walls, and eventually Fortified Walls, is crucial for front-line cities or those facing aggressive neighbors.
- Siege Workshop: Unlocks the ability to construct siege units, essential for breaking through enemy fortifications.
- Outpost: While not a city building, Outposts are crucial for expanding your territory and securing resource nodes. They can be upgraded into full cities once they reach a sufficient population and have a City Hall built.
Strategic Upgrade Path Example (Early Game Focus)
For a balanced early game, consider this upgrade path for your capital city:
- Turn 1-5: Focus on food and production. Build 1-2 Farms and 1-2 Mines/Quarries depending on local resources. This ensures rapid population growth and the ability to construct further buildings quickly.
- Turn 6-10: Prioritize your first City Hall upgrade to a Town Hall to unlock more building slots. Then, build a Research Post to start generating Knowledge and a Marketplace for Gold income.
- Turn 11-15: Build a Barracks to begin recruiting units for defense or early expansion. Consider building Wooden Walls if you anticipate early aggression. Continue to expand your food and production infrastructure as needed.
- Ongoing: As your city grows, upgrade your Town Hall to a Grand City Hall. Continuously evaluate your needs: more research for new spells, more mana for magical units, or more production for a larger army.
Remember that the optimal building strategy will always depend on your chosen Faction, Leader Skills, Empire Perks, and the specific challenges of your current map and opponents. Adaptability is key!
