The Blighted Mire (Custom Scenario Example)
This guide focuses on a challenging custom scenario, "The Blighted Mire," designed to test your adaptability and strategic resource management. You start with limited resources and face aggressive, nature-attuned enemies in a swampy, disease-ridden landscape.
Initial Setup & Early Game (Turns 1-10)
- Starting Location: You begin in the northernmost corner of the map, near a small, defensible hill. Your starting city, Havenwood, has a basic farm and a Builder's Hall.
- First Actions:
- Turn 1: Immediately construct a Scout Post in Havenwood. Send your starting hero and two basic units (e.g., Spearmen) to explore the immediate surroundings. Prioritize uncovering resource nodes and potential enemy outposts.
- Exploration Priority: Head east first. Approximately 3 tiles east of Havenwood, you'll find a Mana Obelisk. Secure it quickly to boost your early mana income.
- Unit Production: Focus on producing Foresters from Havenwood. Their ranged attacks and ability to move through forests efficiently will be crucial in the swampy terrain.
- Research: Prioritize the "Rally of the Lieges" spell to gain additional units, followed by "Basic Materials" to unlock better city structures.
- Key Early Item: Around Turn 5, your scout heading south will discover a small bandit camp. Defeat the bandits to claim the Amulet of Swiftness, which grants +1 Movement to the equipped hero. This is vital for covering ground in the difficult terrain.
Mid-Game Expansion & Defense (Turns 11-30)
- Second City Location: Your primary goal in this phase is to establish a second city. Head southwest from Havenwood. Around 8-10 tiles away, you'll find a fertile plain with a Gold Vein and a Food Resource. This is the ideal location for your second city, Marshguard.
- Defensive Strategy: The primary threat comes from the south and southeast – the Fungal Folk and the Bog Lurkers.
- Fortify Havenwood: Build a Palisade in Havenwood and station at least two units with ranged attacks (Foresters or Archers) on its walls.
- Marshguard Defense: Once Marshguard is founded, immediately build a Watchtower and recruit a defensive hero if possible. The Bog Lurkers often send raiding parties of Swamp Hounds and Gloom Stalkers.
- Resource Acquisition: Secure the Iron Mine located directly south of Havenwood (approx. 5 tiles). This will allow you to produce stronger melee units like Iron Golems later.
- Hero Progression: Focus on leveling your main hero. Invest skill points into abilities that enhance unit damage or provide healing. The "Inspiring Leader" skill is highly recommended for its morale boost.
- Important Discovery: By Turn 25, explore the extreme western edge of the map. You'll find a hidden Ancient Wonder: The Sunken Temple. Clearing its guardians (usually Water Elementals) will grant you a powerful artifact, the Tome of the Deep, which provides significant research bonuses and access to water-based spells.
Late Game Offensive & Victory (Turns 31+)
- Consolidate Power: By this stage, you should have at least two well-developed cities and a strong hero. Begin upgrading your units. Transform your Foresters into Elite Foresters and your Spearmen into Pikemen for increased combat effectiveness.
- Targeting Enemies:
- Fungal Folk (Southeast): Their cities are often lightly defended but produce annoying Sporelings. A swift strike with a hero-led army can dismantle their primary city, Mycelia, and secure valuable fungal resources.
- Bog Lurkers (Southwest): These are your main threat. Their capital, Slimepit, is heavily fortified and guarded by powerful Bog Behemoths. You'll need a full stack of upgraded units, including siege weapons (e.g., Catapults from the Engineer's Guild), to assault it effectively.
- Victory Condition: The scenario typically requires you to conquer all enemy capitals. Ensure your armies are well-supplied and your cities are producing reinforcements.
- Strategic Spell Usage: use spells like "Cleansing Rain" to remove blight from your territories, improving morale and production. Offensive spells such as "Lightning Bolt" or "Stone Skin" can turn the tide in crucial battles.
- Final Push: Once Slimepit is captured, the remaining Bog Lurker forces will be significantly weakened. Mop up any remaining outposts and secure victory. Remember to check for any hidden Ancient Wonders or Resource Nodes that might have been overlooked, as they can provide the edge needed for the final assault.
