Unlocking the Island Fishing System

Fishing is one of the earliest and most rewarding activities you can undertake on your new island. Not only does it provide a steady income source, but it's also essential for completing your Critterpedia and contributing to the museum. Fortunately, Tom Nook ensures you're equipped to start your angling adventures very early on.

To unlock the ability to fish, you'll first need to craft a flimsy fishing rod. This becomes possible shortly after you've set up your tent and completed Tom Nook's initial request to gather 10 tree branches. Once you've collected these branches, speak to Tom Nook. He will then provide you with the DIY recipe for the Flimsy Fishing Rod.

Head over to the workbench inside Resident Services (or your own if you've crafted one) and craft the Flimsy Fishing Rod using 5 tree branches. With your new rod in hand, you're ready to cast your line into the island's rivers, ponds, and ocean. Look for fish shadows in the water and cast your line just in front of them. Be patient, and listen for the distinct "plop" sound when a fish bites!
