Knockdown Mechanics in Apex Legends: Staying in the Fight
Getting downed in Apex Legends doesn't always mean the end of your match. Understanding the knockdown mechanics, including how to defend yourself, how your teammates can help, and the implications of being fully eliminated, is vital for team survival and clutch plays. Don't give up when you're on the ground!
When you're knocked down, you enter a vulnerable state where you can still crawl and use your pistol. This period offers a slim chance of survival or a strategic retreat. Knowing your limitations and how to best utilize this state can prevent your squad from being wiped out prematurely. Your teammates' ability to revive you is also a critical component.
The Knockdown State
When your health reaches zero, you will enter the knockdown state. In this state:
- Movement: You can crawl slowly using your movement controls. You cannot sprint or jump.
- Weapon: You can equip a secondary weapon, typically a P2020 pistol, which has limited ammo.
- Abilities: Your Legend abilities are disabled.
- Reviving: You can be revived by a teammate.
- Shields: Your shields are depleted.
The primary goal when knocked down is to crawl to safety, ideally behind cover, where a teammate can attempt a revive. Avoid staying in the open, as you are an easy target for enemy fire.
Reviving Your Teammates
A teammate can revive you by holding the interact button while standing over your downed body. This process takes several seconds and leaves the reviving player vulnerable. Key considerations for revives:
- Cover: Always attempt revives behind solid cover.
- Enemy Awareness: Ensure the area is clear of immediate threats before initiating a revive.
- Legend Abilities: Some Legend abilities can facilitate safer revives. For example, Lifeline's D.O.C. Heal Drone can provide passive healing during a revive, and Gibraltar's Dome of Protection can shield both players.
- Interrupting Revives: Enemies can interrupt your revive by dealing damage to you or the downed player.
Respawning Your Teammates
If a downed teammate is fully eliminated (either by enemy fire or the Ring), they will drop a Banner Card. A living teammate can pick up this Banner Card and take it to a Respawn Beacon to bring their fallen comrade back into the game. This process has several important aspects:
- Banner Card Timer: Banner Cards expire after 90 seconds. You must retrieve them before this timer runs out.
- Respawn Beacon Locations: Respawn Beacons are marked on the minimap and are often found in buildings or designated areas.
- Respawning Vulnerability: The respawn process takes time and leaves You interacting with the beacon vulnerable. It's crucial to have teammates covering the area.
- Respawned Player Gear: Players who are respawned will return with only a P2020 pistol and no armor or attachments. They will need to loot immediately.
When to Give Up on a Knockdown/Revive
Sometimes, the situation is too dangerous to attempt a revive or retrieve a banner. If you are outnumbered, low on health, or the Ring is closing in rapidly, it might be more strategic to disengage and try to survive to fight another day. Your survival is paramount to your team's overall success. Prioritize your own life if a revive or respawn is too risky.
