Movement Techniques
Mastering movement in Apex Legends is crucial for survival and dominance. From advanced slides and jumps to precise wall bounces and zip-line maneuvers, efficient movement allows you to outmaneuver opponents, reposition quickly, and escape dangerous situations.
Apex Legends is renowned for its fluid and dynamic movement system, which separates skilled players from the rest. Beyond simply running and shooting, a deep understanding of various movement techniques can provide a significant advantage in combat, traversal, and evasion. These techniques, often referred to as "movement tech," allow players to move faster, more unpredictably, and with greater control. Mastering them requires practice and a keen understanding of the game's physics and mechanics.
Here are some essential movement techniques to practice:
- Slide-Jumping: This is a fundamental technique. While sprinting, initiate a slide (usually by pressing 'Ctrl' or 'C'). Just as your character begins to slide, jump. This propels you forward with increased momentum and speed compared to a regular jump. It's excellent for closing gaps, initiating fights, or quickly moving between cover.
- Wall Bouncing: This advanced technique allows you to gain momentum and change direction by interacting with walls. Sprint towards a wall at an angle, slide, and then jump just as you make contact with the wall. With precise timing, your character will bounce off the wall, gaining a burst of speed and altering your trajectory. This is invaluable for dodging enemy fire, surprising opponents, or reaching unexpected vantage points.
- Bunny Hopping (B-Hopping): After taking damage, your screen shakes, and your movement speed is temporarily reduced. Bunny hopping circumvents this. While sprinting, slide and then continuously jump. The key is to time your jumps so that you land and immediately jump again, maintaining momentum. This makes you a harder target to track and allows you to maintain speed even after being hit.
- Zip-Line Techniques:
- Zip-Line Jumping: When riding a zip-line, you can jump off at any point. This allows for quick dismounts to surprise enemies or to reach specific locations.
- Zip-Line Canceling: You can cancel your ascent or descent on a zip-line by pressing your crouch button. This is useful for precise positioning or for quickly dismounting.
- Zip-Line Boosting: Some legends, like Octane with his "Jump Pad," can be used in conjunction with zip-lines to gain extreme height or distance.
- Stair-Climbing: While not as flashy, efficiently navigating stairs is important. Sprinting up stairs is standard, but combining it with a slide can give you a slight speed boost.
- Clambering: Apex Legends automatically allows players to clamber over low obstacles. Understanding the height at which you can clamber is crucial for fluid movement and avoiding getting stuck on geometry.
- Air Strafing: While in the air (e.g., after a jump or from a Gravity Lift), you can slightly influence your direction by moving your mouse or analog stick. This allows for minor adjustments to your trajectory, making you harder to hit.
Practicing these techniques in the Firing Range is highly recommended. Start with the basics like slide-jumping and bunny hopping, then gradually incorporate more complex maneuvers like wall bouncing. Consistent practice will build muscle memory, allowing you to seamlessly integrate these movement techniques into your gameplay, making you a more elusive and formidable opponent on the battlefield.
