Death Boxes
Death boxes are the remnants of fallen Legends, containing their loot and providing a crucial source of gear for surviving players. Understanding how to efficiently loot death boxes, both your own and those of your enemies, is fundamental to maintaining a strong inventory and staying prepared for the next engagement.
Death boxes are a core mechanic in Apex Legends, representing the final inventory of a defeated Legend. When a player is eliminated, their collected items, weapons, armor, and attachments are dropped into a distinctive box. These boxes are not only a primary method of acquiring loot but also serve as a visual indicator of recent combat. Navigating and looting these boxes efficiently, while also being aware of potential threats, is a critical skill for survival and success in the Apex Games.
Looting Your Own Death Box
If you are downed and your teammates manage to retrieve your banner, you can respawn. However, if you are fully eliminated, your death box remains. You can respawn yourself if your banner is retrieved within 90 seconds of your elimination. If your banner is retrieved, you will respawn with basic gear (a P2020, 12 Light Ammo, and a Level 1 White Body Shield). Your death box will contain all the gear you had when you were eliminated. If your teammates can safely reach it, they can loot your items. Be mindful that your death box is a beacon for other players, so approaching it carries risk.
Looting Enemy Death Boxes
Looting enemy death boxes is a primary way to upgrade your gear. When you defeat an enemy squad, their death boxes will appear. You can interact with these boxes to access their inventory. The interface for looting death boxes is similar to looting ground loot or bins, allowing you to transfer items to your own inventory.
Efficient Looting Strategies
- Prioritize: Don't spend too long in a death box. Quickly assess what you need most: better armor, more ammo, healing items, or a specific weapon.
- Quick Swaps: If you find a direct upgrade (e.g., a Level 3 Body Shield when you have a Level 1), swap it out immediately.
- Inventory Management: Be mindful of your inventory space. Don't pick up items you don't need or that will fill up your limited slots.
- Awareness: Always be scanning your surroundings while looting. The sound of gunfire or footsteps nearby means you might be the next target.
- Team Looting: Coordinate with your team. If one player is low on ammo, another can prioritize looting for ammo for them.
Death Box Contents
A death box contains the following items from the fallen Legend:
- Weapons (with attachments)
- Body Shield (Evo Shield or Body Shield)
- Helmet
- Knockdown Shield
- Backpack
- Ammo
- Healing Items (Syringes, Med Kits, Shield Cells, Shield Batteries, Phoenix Kits)
- Ordnance (Frag Grenades, Arc Stars, Thermite Grenades)
- Attachments
- Legend Tokens (if applicable)
The Golden Rule of Death Boxes
The most important rule when dealing with death boxes is to be aware of your surroundings. A death box is a clear s that a fight has just occurred, and other players may be drawn to the sound of gunfire or the visual of the box itself. Always approach with caution, and consider having a teammate cover you while you loot. Sometimes, the best strategy is to leave a death box if the risk of being third-partied is too high.
