Optional Objectives & Full Synchronization
Achieving Full Synchronization in Assassin's Creed II is more than just a completionist's goal; it's a testament to your mastery of Ezio's skills and the Animus's simulation. Each main memory sequence, and many side missions, present optional objectives that, when completed, grant you 100% synchronization for that memory. This guide will break down common optional objectives and provide actionable strategies to ensure Ezio performs exactly as Desmond's ancestors did.
Understanding Full Synchronization
Full Synchronization is achieved by completing a memory's primary objective AND any secondary, optional objectives. These objectives are usually revealed at the start of a memory or can be viewed in the Animus's DNA menu. Failing an optional objective does not prevent you from completing the memory, but it will prevent 100% synchronization for that specific memory. You can always replay a memory from the DNA menu to attempt full synchronization again.
Common Optional Objective Types & Strategies
While objectives vary, several patterns emerge throughout Ezio's journey. Mastering these core strategies will greatly improve your chances of achieving full sync:
- Remain Undetected:
- Strategy: This often requires a stealth-first approach. Utilize rooftops, haystacks, and crowds for cover. The "Blend" ability (holding the interact button near civilians) is crucial.
- Tools: Smoke Bombs can create temporary cover for escapes or to bypass patrols. Throwing Knives can silently eliminate isolated guards from a distance.
- Example: In Sequence 4, Memory 4: "Novella's Secret," you might need to infiltrate the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella without being seen. Plan your route using the surrounding buildings and blend with the monks.
- Do Not Kill Anyone / Kill Only the Target:
- Strategy: Focus on non-lethal takedowns (fists, disarms) for guards if necessary, or avoid combat entirely. For targets, ensure your kill is clean and doesn't involve collateral damage.
- Tools: Disarm is invaluable for taking out guards without killing them. Fists can knock out guards temporarily.
- Example: In Sequence 3, Memory 4: "Last Man Standing," you might be tasked with only killing Vieri de' Pazzi. Avoid engaging his guards in lethal combat; use disarms or simply run past them to reach Vieri.
- Perform Air Assassinations / Stealth Kills:
- Strategy: Position Ezio above or behind targets. For air assassinations, climb to a suitable vantage point (rooftops, beams, ledges) directly above the target. For stealth kills, approach from behind while blended or hidden.
- Tools: Hidden Blades are essential. The Double Hidden Blade (unlocked later) allows for simultaneous kills.
- Example: In Sequence 6, Memory 2: "The Wolf's Den," you might need to perform a specific number of air assassinations on guards within the Pazzi Conspiracy hideout. Look for opportunities from the rafters.
- Do Not Touch the Water:
- Strategy: This objective is common in Venice. Carefully navigate rooftops, bridges, and gondolas. Plan your parkour routes to avoid accidental falls into canals.
- Tools: Your parkour skills are your primary tool here.
- Example: Several memories in Venice, particularly those involving chases or infiltrations, will have this objective. Take your time and observe patrol paths before committing to a jump.
- Complete Within a Time Limit:
- Strategy: Prioritize speed and efficiency. Know your route, avoid unnecessary detours or conflicts. Use fast travel points if available and applicable.
- Tools: Sprinting and efficient parkour are key.
- Example: Chase sequences often have time limits. In Sequence 2, Memory 1: "Fitting In," during the race against Federico, you must reach the viewpoint first. Practice the route to optimize your jumps and climbs.
- Avoid Taking Damage / Do Not Get Hit:
- Strategy: Focus on defensive combat (counters, dodges) or, ideally, avoid combat altogether through stealth. If combat is unavoidable, prioritize enemies that pose the most threat and use smoke bombs to disorient.
- Tools: Counter-attacks and dodges are paramount. Smoke Bombs can provide a brief reprieve.
- Example: In challenging combat scenarios, this objective forces you to perfect your counter-kill timing.
Replaying Memories for Full Synchronization
Don't be discouraged if you miss an optional objective on your first attempt. The Animus allows you to replay any completed memory from the DNA strand menu. When replaying, you'll start at the beginning of that memory with your current gear and abilities. This is an excellent opportunity to experiment with different approaches and perfect your strategy without impacting your main game progression.
Remember, patience and observation are your greatest allies in achieving Full Synchronization. Study guard patrols, identify escape routes, and utilize Ezio's full repertoire of skills to become the ultimate Assassin.
