Game Modes
Beyond the captivating main narrative, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag offers a rich tapestry of game modes designed to extend your piratical adventures. From competitive multiplayer to challenging side activities, understanding these modes is key to maximizing your time as Edward Kenway.
Single-Player Campaign (Story Mode)
This is the core experience of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, following the journey of Edward Kenway from a privateer to a formidable pirate and, eventually, an Assassin. The campaign is structured into Sequences, each containing multiple Memories (missions).
- Progression: Complete primary objectives within each Memory to advance the story.
- Full Synchronization: For each Memory, strive to achieve 100% synchronization by completing optional objectives. These often involve specific combat techniques, stealth approaches, or time limits. Achieving full synchronization unlocks cosmetic rewards and provides a deeper understanding of the Animus's simulation.
- Key Locations: The campaign will take you through iconic Caribbean locations such as Havana, Kingston, and Nassau, as well as countless smaller islands and naval battlegrounds.
- Recommended Strategy: While you can rush through the main story, we highly recommend taking time between Sequences to explore, upgrade the Jackdaw, and complete side activities. This will make later missions significantly easier and more enjoyable.
Exploration & Side Activities (Open World)
The vast open world of Black Flag is teeming with activities outside the main story. These are crucial for gathering resources, earning money, and enhancing Edward and the Jackdaw.
- Naval Contracts: Found at various harbors, these missions involve sinking specific enemy vessels or convoys. They are excellent for earning Reales and valuable resources like Metal and Wood. Look for the ship's wheel icon on your map.
- Assassin Contracts: Available in major cities like Havana, Kingston, and Nassau, these stealth-focused missions require you to eliminate specific targets. They reward you with Reales and contribute to unlocking the Assassin outfit. Look for the Assassin insignia icon.
- Templar Hunts: A series of side quests initiated by finding specific Templar Keys. Collecting all keys unlocks a special Templar Armor set. These often involve tracking targets and engaging in combat.
- Treasure Hunts: Discover treasure maps (often found on dead enemies or in chests) that lead to buried chests containing significant amounts of Reales and rare crafting plans. Follow the map's illustration to locate the "X" on the island.
- Whaling & Hunting: Engage in mini-games to hunt various marine life (whales, sharks) and land animals (jaguars, ocelots). These activities provide animal parts necessary for crafting upgrades for Edward's health, ammunition pouches, and weapon holsters.
- Whaling Strategy: Use your harpoons effectively. Aim for critical spots and be prepared to brace for the whale's attacks. Upgrade your harpoon strength and storage at the Jackdaw's cabin.
- Hunting Strategy: Use your pistol or blowpipe (sleep darts for stealth, berserk darts for distraction) for efficient kills. Skinning animals provides materials.
- Diving Bells: Unlock diving bell locations to explore underwater shipwrecks and caves. These areas contain valuable cargo, Animus Fragments, and crafting plans, but beware of sharks and moray eels. Ensure you have enough air before venturing too deep.
- Forts: Conquer enemy forts by first destroying their defenses with the Jackdaw, then infiltrating and assassinating the captain. Conquering forts reveals more of the map and provides safe harbor points.
- Smuggler's Dens: Hidden locations often requiring parkour to access, containing chests and sometimes unique collectibles.
- Collectibles:
- Animus Fragments: Glowing blue fragments scattered across the map, often in hard-to-reach places. Collecting them contributes to game completion.
- Sea Shanties: Chase down flying sheets of music to collect new songs for your crew to sing while sailing.
- Manuscripts: Found in chests, these provide lore and sometimes reveal treasure locations.
Multiplayer
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag features a robust online multiplayer component, allowing players to compete in various modes, often focusing on stealth and assassination.
- Game Types:
- Wanted: The classic Assassin's Creed multiplayer mode. Players are assigned a target to assassinate while simultaneously being hunted by another player. Stealth and blending are paramount.
- Manhunt: Team-based mode where one team hunts the other, then roles reverse. Coordination and environmental awareness are key.
- Domination: Capture and hold control points on the map. Rewards both combat and stealth.
- Deathmatch: A more direct assassination mode where targets are assigned and points are awarded for kills.
- Wolfpack: A cooperative mode where up to four players work together to assassinate AI targets within a time limit. Progress through sequences of targets, with increasing difficulty. Excellent for earning Abstergo Credits and experience.
- Progression: Earn experience points (XP) to level up, unlocking new abilities, perks, and cosmetic items for your avatar. Abstergo Credits, earned through matches, can be used to purchase customization options.
- Character Customization: Personalize your multiplayer avatar with different outfits, weapons, and taunts.
- Strategy: In competitive modes, always prioritize blending with NPCs. Use your abilities (like Disguise or Smoke Bomb) strategically. In Wolfpack, communication and efficient target elimination are vital.
