DLC Characters
Beyond Edward Kenway's epic journey, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag offers additional playable characters through its downloadable content, enriching the Caribbean experience with new stories and challenges. This section details how to access and make the most of these unique additions.
Adéwalé (Freedom Cry DLC)
Adéwalé, Edward Kenway's loyal quartermaster, takes center stage in the standalone Freedom Cry DLC. This expansion provides a powerful narrative focusing on the abolition of slavery. Playing as Adéwalé offers a distinct gameplay experience with new weapons and abilities tailored to his mission.
Accessing Freedom Cry
- Ensure you have purchased and downloaded the Freedom Cry DLC from your platform's digital store (e.g., PlayStation Store, Xbox Marketplace, Steam).
- From the main menu of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, select "Freedom Cry" to launch the standalone story. It does not integrate directly into Edward's campaign.
Adéwalé's Unique Arsenal & Abilities
Adéwalé brings a specialized set of tools to his fight for freedom:
- Machete: His primary melee weapon, capable of swift and brutal takedowns. Upgrade it at any general store or the Jackdaw's quartermaster station for increased damage and efficiency.
- Blunderbuss: A powerful, short-range firearm perfect for clearing groups of enemies. Its wide spread makes it ideal for close-quarters combat. Ammunition can be purchased or looted.
- Firecrackers: A non-lethal distraction tool. Throw them to draw enemy attention, allowing for stealthy approaches or escapes. Essential for freeing slaves without direct confrontation.
- Rope Dart: While Edward also uses this, Adéwalé's proficiency with it feels more integrated into his combat style, allowing for quick environmental kills or pulling enemies into range.
Key Strategies for Adéwalé
- Focus on Liberation: Many missions in Freedom Cry revolve around freeing slaves. Use stealth, firecrackers, and environmental takedowns to avoid raising alarms. Prioritize eliminating slave drivers and guards quietly.
- Recruit Maroons: As you free slaves, some will join your cause as "Maroons." These allies can be called upon in combat to assist Adéwalé, creating diversions or engaging enemies directly. The more Maroons you recruit, the stronger your support.
- Upgrade the Experto Crede: Adéwalé's ship, the Experto Crede, is crucial. Invest in hull armor, broadside cannons, and swivel guns early on. Naval combat in Freedom Cry can be challenging, especially against slave ships and Man O' Wars.
- Utilize the Blunderbuss: Don't underestimate its power. In situations where stealth fails or you're overwhelmed, a well-placed blunderbuss shot can turn the tide of a fight.
