Act 1: The Mind Flayer Parasite
Act 1 focuses on finding a cure for the Mind Flayer parasite. You will encounter the Githyanki, a race that despises Mind Flayers due to their history of enslavement. They ride Red Dragons and are a significant force in the Astral Plane. Your journey will take you through various locations, offering different approaches to dealing with the parasite, including seeking help from individuals like Auntie Ethel or Omeluum.
After the crash, head to the next area. You can find a Gold Key on a corpse (X:28 Y:-354) to open an elaborate chest. In the middle of the room, a woman is trapped inside a Mind Flayer Pond (X:46 Y:-354). North of the room, another corpse (X:61 Y:-353) holds a Bronze Necklace and an Eldritch Rune. Interacting with the control panel will cause the woman in the pod to transform, but she cannot attack you.
Head northeast to the crash site, where you'll find dead goblins with lootable items and supplies. Following the path southwest leads to an injured Mind Flayer (X:180 Y:325). You have three options:
- Stomp its head and kill it to loot its corpse.
- Spare the brain; it will direct you to the helm and can become a follower.
Several characters offer potential solutions for the parasite:
- Auntie Ethel: Located at the Riverside Teahouse, she offers to remove the parasite. This option is mutually exclusive with Volo's Ersatz Eye and Wyll's stone eye. If weakened (below 20% HP), she may beg for her life and offer power in exchange for letting her keep Mayrina and her baby. You can intimidate or deceive her to free Mayrina and gain power.
- Omeluum: A friendly Mind Flayer Trader and member of the Society of Brilliance, found at Ebonlake Grotto in the Underdark after being contacted by Blurg. He can attempt to remove the tadpole. You can purchase his help with gold or by trading a story or information about the Nautiloid (70 gp).
- Goblin Priestess Gut: Agree to let a character be branded by Gut in the Goblin Camp.
You can also craft Sussur weapons in the Underdark. To do this, light the furnace, use the bellows, combine Sussur bark with the furnace, and then use a plain dagger, sickle, or greatsword to create a Sussur weapon with a +1 enchantment and the ability to silence on hit. Sussur Tree Bark is found at the Sussur Tree in the Dread Hollow (X: -14, Y: -138).
