The game progresses through non-linear chapters, spanning approximately 17 years of Jodie Holmes' life.

Jodie is controlled using the left analog stick for movement. The right analog stick is used for interactions, often requiring movement towards a on-screen dot, with choices sometimes presented as different dots.

Certain actions, like sneaking or climbing, require specific button prompts, often involving holding one button while manipulating another (e.g., hold L1, then R1 while maintaining L1). Failure may result in Jodie retrying or fumbling.

Action buttons are frequently used for dialogue choices, indicated by emotional reactions or topics rather than direct quotes. Timeliness is important, as the game may auto-select a choice if the player is too slow. Some choices have significant consequences.

The Triangle button is unique: it typically switches between controlling Jodie and Aiden, and in dialogues, it can be used to end discussions or options.

Other action buttons simulate Jodie's arms for actions like climbing or playing instruments, often requiring repeated presses (e.g., X for left, O for right).

The game utilizes the PS3 controller's motion sensor for actions like lifting or dropping the controller to simulate Jodie climbing or pouring. Timing and gentle movements are key.

Jodie possesses combat abilities, allowing her to fight or evade. In these sequences, the screen slows down. On easier difficulties, an arrow indicates the direction for the right analog stick; on harder difficulties, players must react to on-screen cues. Failure in combat or evasion can lead to capture but not death.

Aiden can be controlled by switching with the Triangle button. He is tethered to Jodie and can only move within a certain range, indicated by orange glows.

Aiden's basic function is to interact with objects marked with blue dots. This involves locking on with L1 and moving both analog sticks down and towards the center.

Aiden can nudge people (marked with a blue dot on their body) by locking on with L1 and moving the analog sticks horizontally apart and then pushing them towards each other.

Possessing people involves targeting individuals with an orange aura. Lock on with L1 and use the same horizontal pulling technique. The controller will vibrate, and the person's eyes will turn white.

Aiden can kill by targeting victims with a red aura. Pull and push the analog sticks sideways to choke them, maintaining the hold until their red aura dissipates.

Healing involves targeting individuals with a green spot indicating an injury. Move the analog sticks to cover the green spot until it disappears.

Aiden can create an energy shield for Jodie by holding both L1 and R1, pulling the sticks apart, and holding them.

Channeling spirits requires connecting a line between an object or dead body and Jodie's head using the analog sticks. Jodie will then experience memories.

Destroying evil spirits (often appearing like sentinels) involves locking on, pressing both analog sticks down, and pushing towards the target dot. If they grab Jodie, pull the sticks horizontally apart and then center them.

A typical chapter involves Jodie undertaking a mission, using her skills while Aiden manipulates objects, defeats spirits, or possesses people. Jodie acts as the carrier, and Aiden as the offensive force.

Jodie can ask Aiden to help others by healing them and channeling memories.
