Covenants & Their Rewards

Covenants in Bloodborne represent allegiances to various factions within Yharnam and beyond. Joining a covenant grants you unique items, gestures, and often unlocks specific multiplayer functionalities or passive benefits. You can only be a member of one covenant at a time, but you can freely switch between them by equipping a different covenant rune in your Caryll Rune slot. Note that changing covenants does not penalize your standing with previous factions, nor does it reset any progress made towards their rewards.

Hunter of Hunters

This covenant is dedicated to hunting down other Hunters who have succumbed to the beastly scourge. It emphasizes justice and purging those who have lost their way.

  • How to Join:
    1. Progress through the game until you reach the Cathedral Ward.
    2. Locate Eileen the Crow. She first appears on a balcony above the sewers in Central Yharnam, near the shortcut gate leading to Father Gascoigne's arena. If you miss her here, she will later appear outside the Grand Cathedral in Cathedral Ward, after defeating Vicar Amelia.
    3. Speak with Eileen and exhaust her dialogue options.
    4. Later, after defeating Rom, the Vacuous Spider, return to the Grand Cathedral. You will find Eileen injured on the steps outside.
    5. Speak with her again. She will ask for your assistance in defeating a rogue Hunter inside the Grand Cathedral.
    6. Defeat the Bloody Crow of Cainhurst within the Grand Cathedral. This is a challenging fight; be prepared for a fast, aggressive opponent.
    7. After defeating the Bloody Crow, speak to Eileen one last time. She will bestow upon you the Hunter Rune.
  • Rewards:
    • Hunter Rune: Equipping this rune changes your co-op summon sign to a different color and grants a small chance for you to be summoned as a hostile phantom to hunt other Hunters (though this is rare and less direct than other PvP covenants). More significantly, it provides a passive boost to your stamina recovery.
    • Hunter's Mark Gesture: Obtained upon joining.

Executioners

The Executioners are a militant order dedicated to eradicating the Vilebloods of Cainhurst, whom they view as abominations. Their focus is on righteous fury against those tainted by forbidden blood.

  • How to Join:
    1. Defeat Vicar Amelia in the Grand Cathedral.
    2. Acquire the Cainhurst Summons from Iosefka's Clinic. To do this, you must enter the clinic through the back entrance. From the Forbidden Woods, find the cave that leads to the clinic's rear. Navigate through the clinic until you reach the room where you first awoke. The Cainhurst Summons will be on a table.
    3. Travel to the Hemwick Charnel Lane lamp.
    4. Stand near the obelisk in the area where you fought the Witch of Hemwick. A cutscene will trigger, and a carriage will transport you to Cainhurst Castle.
    5. Navigate through Forsaken Cainhurst Castle until you reach the boss, Martyr Logarius.
    6. Defeat Martyr Logarius.
    7. Equip the Crown of Illusions (found on the throne behind Logarius's arena) and approach the throne. A hidden path will open.
    8. Enter the hidden room and speak with Queen Annalise, the Vileblood Queen.
    9. Kneel before her and pledge your oath. She will grant you the Corruption Rune, initiating you into the Vilebloods covenant.
    10. Now, with the Corruption Rune equipped, return to the Grand Cathedral. You will find Alfred, the Executioner, kneeling before the altar.
    11. Speak to Alfred and show him the Corruption Rune (this dialogue option appears only if you have the Corruption Rune equipped).
    12. Alfred will then ask for the Cainhurst Summons. Give it to him.
    13. Return to the throne room in Cainhurst Castle. You will find Alfred there, having executed Queen Annalise.
    14. Speak to Alfred one last time. He will give you the Radiant Rune, marking your allegiance to the Executioners.
  • Rewards:
    • Radiant Rune: Equipping this rune allows you to be summoned as a co-operator to assist other Executioners against Vileblood invaders. It also slightly increases your maximum HP.
    • Roar Gesture: Obtained upon joining.

Vilebloods

The Vilebloods are a forbidden lineage residing in Cainhurst Castle, cursed with immortal blood. They seek to gather Blood Dregs, which represent the blood of their enemies, to offer to their queen.

  • How to Join:
    1. Follow steps 1-7 from the Executioners covenant guide to reach Queen Annalise in Forsaken Cainhurst Castle.
    2. Kneel before Queen Annalise and pledge your oath. She will grant you the Corruption Rune.
  • Rewards:
    • Corruption Rune: Equipping this rune allows you to collect Blood Dregs from defeated hostile Hunters (both NPCs and other players). These Dregs can be offered to Queen Annalise to increase your covenant rank. It also provides a passive HP regeneration effect.
    • Respect Gesture: Obtained upon joining.
    • Chikage: A powerful trick weapon that scales with Bloodtinge, available for purchase from the Messengers in the Hunter's Dream after joining.
    • Cainhurst Knight Set: A stylish armor set also available for purchase from the Messengers after joining.
    • Rank Rewards: Offering Blood Dregs to Queen Annalise increases your rank within the Vilebloods. Higher ranks unlock further rewards, such as the Lost Chikage and Uncanny Chikage variations.

The League

The League is a cooperative covenant focused on assisting other Hunters and cleansing the world of beasts. They are led by Valtr, a formidable Hunter who seeks to eradicate all vermin.

  • How to Join:
    1. Access the Forbidden Woods area.
    2. From the Forbidden Woods lamp, proceed until you find a large building with a windmill.
    3. Inside this building, you will find Valtr, the Master of The League.
    4. Speak to Valtr and agree to join his covenant. He will give you the Impurity Rune.
  • Rewards:
    • Impurity Rune: Equipping this rune allows you to summon League confederates (NPCs) for certain boss battles and co-op with other League members. It also grants a small boost to your maximum HP.
    • League Oath Gesture: Obtained upon joining.
    • Whistle Gesture: Obtained after defeating the first Vermin.
    • Vermin: A unique item dropped by certain enemies and obtained through successful co-op sessions while wearing the Impurity Rune. You can offer Vermin to Valtr to increase your League rank.
    • Madara's Whistle: A hunter tool unlocked after offering 5 Vermin to Valtr.
    • League Staff: Valtr's weapon, dropped if you kill him or if he dies after you complete his questline (by offering 5 Vermin and then reloading the area).

Moon Presence (Secret Covenant)

While not a traditional covenant with a rune to equip, aligning with the Moon Presence is the ultimate culmination of a specific ending path, granting unique insight into the true nature of the hunt.

  • How to Join:
    1. Consume at least three One Third of Umbilical Cord items before facing Gehrman, the First Hunter, in the Hunter's Dream. These cords can be found at various locations:
      • Abandoned Old Workshop: On the altar.
      • Mergo's Wet Nurse: Dropped upon defeating this boss.
      • Iosefka's Clinic: Obtained by defeating the imposter Iosefka after Rom, the Vacuous Spider, has been defeated.
      • Arianna's Child: After sending Arianna to Oedon Chapel and progressing the story, she will give birth to a celestial being. Kill the child to obtain the cord.
    2. Refuse Gehrman's offer at the end of the game.
    3. Defeat Gehrman in battle.
    4. The Moon Presence will then descend, and you will engage it in a final boss fight.
    5. Defeat the Moon Presence.
  • Rewards:
    • Child of the Great Ones Ending: This ending transforms your Hunter into an infant Great One, signifying your ascension beyond humanity and the cycle of the hunt.
    • Trophy: "Childhood's Beginning"
