Historically, the Kar98k, or Karabiner 98 kurz, is a shortened version of the Mauser 98 introduced in 1935. It served as the standard military rifle for Germany for over 50 years and remains in use in some parts of the world today. This bolt-action rifle features a fixed internal magazine for 5 rounds and could be equipped with various accessories, including bayonets, rifle grenade launchers, and scopes. Several scope variants were available, such as the Zf 40, Zf 41 (1.5x zoom), Zf 39, and Zf 4 (4x zoom). Approximately six percent of the Kar98k production was fitted with scope rails for sniper variants. The German sniper Gefreiter Hetzenauer achieved 345 confirmed kills with this weapon. The standard rifle sights could be adjusted from 100m to 2000m in 50m increments.

During World War II, Germany entered the conflict with over 2.7 million Kar98k rifles. By the end of the war, an additional 7.5 million were delivered to the army, including over 126,000 sniper modifications. Significant numbers were also supplied to the Luftwaffe, Navy, and SS. The standard price for a Kar98k rifle was 70 RM.
