Techs & Combos

Master Chrono Trigger's combat with unique Techs and powerful Combo Techs. Learn how character abilities combine for devastating joint attacks.

Techs & Combos

Chrono Trigger's combat system shines with its innovative Techs and Combo Techs. Unlike traditional RPGs where characters act independently, Techs are special abilities unique to each character, while Combo Techs are powerful joint attacks performed by two or even three party members. Mastering these will be crucial for overcoming the game's many challenges.

Understanding Techs

Each character learns Techs by gaining Tech Points (TP) after battles. The more TP a character accumulates, the more Techs they unlock. These range from offensive spells and physical attacks to healing and support abilities. Pay close attention to elemental affinities and attack types (physical, magic) when selecting Techs for battle.

  • Chrono: Focuses on Lightning-elemental attacks and powerful physical strikes. His early Techs like Cyclone (learned at 10 TP) are excellent for clearing groups of weak enemies, while Lightning (learned at 50 TP) becomes a staple for magic damage.
  • Marle: Specializes in healing and Ice-elemental magic. Aura (learned at 10 TP) is your first healing spell, and Ice (learned at 50 TP) provides reliable magic damage.
  • Lucca: A master of Fire-elemental magic. Her Flame Toss (learned at 10 TP) is a good early offensive option, and Fire (learned at 50 TP) is essential for exploiting enemy weaknesses.
  • Frog: A hybrid attacker with Water-elemental magic and strong physical attacks. Slurp Cut (learned at 10 TP) is a solid single-target physical attack that also heals him, while Water (learned at 50 TP) adds magic utility.
  • Robo: A durable physical attacker with some healing and status-inflicting Techs. Punch (learned at 10 TP) is a basic physical attack, and Heal Beam (learned at 50 TP) provides convenient party-wide healing.
  • Ayla: Pure physical powerhouse with no magic. Her Techs often involve status effects or high damage. Kiss (learned at 10 TP) is a single-target heal, and Dino Tail (learned at 50 TP) is a strong physical attack.
  • Magus: A dark magic specialist. His Techs are generally powerful and often hit multiple targets. He joins later in the game with many Techs already learned, such as Dark Bomb and Dark Matter.

Unlocking Combo Techs

Combo Techs are the true game-changers in Chrono Trigger. These are unlocked when two or three characters in your active party have learned specific individual Techs that can be combined. The game will notify you when a new Combo Tech is available. To access them, simply select "Tech" in battle, and if a combination is possible, it will appear as an option.

Early Game Combo Techs (Guardia Forest & Truce Canyon)

Focus on these combinations early on to gain a significant advantage:

  • Cyclone Kick (Chrono + Ayla): Requires Chrono's Cyclone and Ayla's Kick. This is an excellent early-game area-of-effect (AoE) physical attack, perfect for clearing groups of weaker enemies in areas like the Guardia Forest or Truce Canyon. Prioritize learning Kick for Ayla as soon as she joins.
  • Fire Whirl (Chrono + Lucca): Requires Chrono's Cyclone and Lucca's Flame Toss. This combines Chrono's AoE with Lucca's fire power, making it effective against multiple enemies, especially those weak to fire. You'll find this particularly useful in the Cathedral.
  • Ice Sword (Chrono + Marle): Requires Chrono's Slash and Marle's Ice. A strong single-target attack that combines physical and ice damage. Great for bosses or tougher individual enemies. Chrono learns Slash at 20 TP.

Mid-Game Combo Techs (Zenan Bridge & Beyond)

As your characters gain more Techs, more powerful combinations become available:

  • Fire Sword (Chrono + Lucca): Requires Chrono's Fire Sword (learned at 200 TP) and Lucca's Fire. A significant upgrade from Fire Whirl, delivering potent single-target fire damage. This will be invaluable against many bosses in the Middle Ages.
  • Antipode (Lucca + Marle): Requires Lucca's Fire and Marle's Ice. This powerful dual-elemental magic attack hits all enemies, making it fantastic for crowd control and exploiting elemental weaknesses. You'll want this for the Magus's Castle segment.
  • Frog Squash (Frog + Robo): Requires Frog's Slurp Cut and Robo's Rocket Punch. A strong physical attack that can hit multiple enemies. Robo learns Rocket Punch at 100 TP.

Triple Techs (Late Game & Optional Content)

Triple Techs are the ultimate expressions of teamwork, requiring three specific Techs to be learned. These are often devastating and can turn the tide of battle.

  • Delta Force (Chrono + Lucca + Marle): Requires Chrono's Lightning 2, Lucca's Fire 2, and Marle's Ice 2. This unleashes a massive, non-elemental explosion on all enemies, making it one of the most powerful AoE attacks in the game. Prioritize learning these advanced elemental spells for your magic users.
  • Arc Impulse (Chrono + Frog + Robo): Requires Chrono's Spincut, Frog's Leap Slash, and Robo's Laser Spin. A powerful physical Triple Tech that hits all enemies. Chrono learns Spincut at 400 TP, Frog learns Leap Slash at 300 TP, and Robo learns Laser Spin at 200 TP.
  • Gatling Kick (Ayla + Robo + Lucca): Requires Ayla's Triple Kick, Robo's Robo Tackle, and Lucca's Flare. A unique physical and fire combination that deals immense damage to a single target. Ayla learns Triple Kick at 600 TP, Robo learns Robo Tackle at 300 TP, and Lucca learns Flare (her ultimate magic) at 800 TP.

Strategic Tech Usage

When planning your party and battle strategy, consider the following:

  • Elemental Weaknesses: Many enemies have elemental weaknesses. Using the correct elemental Tech or Combo Tech will significantly increase your damage output. For example, most enemies in the Fire Caves are weak to Ice, making Marle's Ice and the Chrono/Marle Ice Sword invaluable.
  • Area of Effect vs. Single Target: Decide whether you need to clear multiple weaker enemies or focus damage on a single, powerful foe. Combo Techs like Delta Force are fantastic for groups, while Fire Sword excels against bosses.
  • Healing and Support: Don't neglect healing and support Techs. Marle's Aura and Cure, along with Robo's Heal Beam, are essential for keeping your party alive. Some Techs also inflict status effects, which can be crucial in tougher battles.
  • TP Management: While TP is gained after every battle, some powerful Techs consume a lot. Use them judiciously, especially in dungeons where you can't easily restore MP. Items like Ether and MegaEther are your friends!

By understanding and strategically using the vast array of Techs and Combo Techs available, you'll be well-equipped to face any challenge Chrono Trigger throws your way.
