Achieving Specific Endings
Chrono Trigger is famous for its multiple endings, offering significant replayability and encouraging players to explore different choices. The game features a total of 13 distinct endings, each influenced by key decisions made throughout the narrative and the player's actions in the endgame.
The primary factor determining the ending is when you choose to confront Lavos, the game's main antagonist. The earlier you face Lavos, the more likely you are to achieve a 'bad' ending, as your party will be less prepared. Conversely, delaying the final confrontation allows for more character development, side quests, and preparation, leading to 'good' endings.
Here's a general breakdown of how to influence the endings:
- Early Confrontation (Pre-Endgame): If you travel to the Millennial Fair and use the Epoch to fly to the Ocean Palace before completing certain story arcs, you can trigger some of the earliest and often less favorable endings. These endings typically reflect a lack of preparedness and a premature end to the heroes' journey.
- Mid-Game Confrontation: Engaging Lavos after acquiring most of the party members but before completing all major side quests will result in several intermediate endings. These might show the world in a state of flux or highlight the consequences of specific character fates.
- Late-Game Confrontation (Post-Side Quests): The 'best' endings are generally achieved by defeating Lavos after completing most, if not all, of the optional side quests. These quests often involve gathering powerful allies, obtaining ultimate weapons, and resolving lingering plot threads. This allows the heroes to face Lavos with their full strength and knowledge.
- New Game+ Specific Endings: Several endings are only accessible when playing on New Game+. This mode allows you to retain your levels, equipment, and abilities from a previous playthrough, enabling you to tackle challenges and make choices you couldn't on your first run. These often involve unique scenarios and humorous outcomes.
To unlock all endings, it's recommended to play through the game multiple times, making different choices and confronting Lavos at various points in the story. The game's structure is designed to reward this exploration.
