Post-Game Challenges

Congratulations, time traveler! Defeating Lavos is a monumental achievement, but Chrono Trigger offers a wealth of additional content and challenges for those seeking to truly master the flow of time. This section will guide you through the most rewarding post-game activities, from acquiring ultimate equipment to confronting hidden bosses.

The Black Omen Revisited

Even after its initial defeat, the Black Omen holds secrets and powerful enemies. Re-entering this floating fortress in 2300 AD (or any other era it appears in) allows you to farm valuable experience, Tech Points, and rare items. The enemies here are some of the toughest in the game, so ensure your party is well-equipped and at a high level (ideally 60+).

  • Location: The Black Omen appears in 1000 AD, 12000 BC, and 2300 AD. For post-game farming, 2300 AD is generally preferred due to the higher enemy density and potential drops.
  • Key Enemies & Drops:
    • Lavos Spawn: These mini-bosses frequently drop valuable items like the Speed Tab, Power Tab, and Magic Tab, which permanently increase character stats.
    • Panthera: Can drop the rare Vigil Hat, offering defense and magic defense.
    • Nu: Found in specific rooms, Nues can drop multiple Speed Tabs. Use Ayla's Charm Tech to maximize your chances.
  • Strategy: Focus on multi-target attacks to clear groups quickly. Equip accessories that protect against status effects, as many enemies in the Black Omen inflict various ailments. The Gold Stud and Silver Stud are excellent for reducing MP consumption, allowing for more frequent use of powerful Techs.

Ozzie's Fort (DS/Mobile Exclusive)

For players of the DS and mobile versions, a new challenge awaits in 600 AD. After defeating Magus, return to Ozzie's Fort, which has been rebuilt and now houses a gauntlet of familiar foes and a new, formidable boss.

  • Location: 600 AD, accessible via the same entrance as the original fort.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. Enter Ozzie's Fort in 600 AD. You'll immediately notice the increased difficulty.
    2. Navigate through rooms filled with enhanced versions of Ozzie, Flea, and Slash. These encounters are tougher than their initial appearances.
    3. Ozzie's Room: Defeat Ozzie once more. He's stronger but employs similar tactics.
    4. Flea's Room: Battle Flea. Be prepared for her status-inflicting attacks.
    5. Slash's Room: Confront Slash. His physical attacks are potent.
    6. The Great Ozzie: After defeating all three, you'll reach a new area where you face the Great Ozzie. This boss is a significantly upgraded version of Ozzie. Focus on high-damage single-target Techs and keep your party healed.
  • Rewards: Defeating the Great Ozzie earns you the powerful Ozzie's Hat, a headgear that boosts defense and magic defense, and the Flea Vest, an armor piece offering excellent magic defense.

Dimensional Vortexes (DS/Mobile Exclusive)

These mysterious portals appear across different time periods, leading to challenging dungeons with unique enemies and valuable rewards. There are three main Dimensional Vortexes:

1. End of Time Vortex

  • Location: End of Time, accessible after completing the game.
  • Key Items: Contains valuable Tabs (Power, Magic, Speed) and high-tier equipment.
  • Boss: The Dream Devourer. This boss is a true test of your party's strength and strategy. It has multiple forms and resistances. Focus on elemental weaknesses and sustained damage.
  • Reward: Defeating the Dream Devourer unlocks the Lost Sanctum.

2. Prehistoric Vortex

  • Location: 65,000,000 BC, near the Tyranno Lair.
  • Key Items: Offers some of the best physical attack equipment, including the Master's Crown and Valor Mail.
  • Boss: A powerful variant of the Black Tyranno. Be prepared for high physical damage and status effects.

3. Future Vortex

  • Location: 2300 AD, in the Bangor Dome area.
  • Key Items: Excellent magic-oriented equipment, such as the Elemental Aegis and Seraphic Wing.
  • Boss: A souped-up version of the Rust Tyranno. This fight emphasizes elemental resistance and careful healing.

General Vortex Strategy: Each Vortex features unique enemies with specific weaknesses. Experiment with different party setups and Techs. Always carry a good supply of healing items (MegaElixir, Full Tonic) and status-curing items (Panacea, Heal).

The Lost Sanctum (DS/Mobile Exclusive)

Accessible after defeating the Dream Devourer in the End of Time Vortex, the Lost Sanctum is a massive, multi-era side quest that culminates in some of the game's most powerful gear and a new playable character.

  • Location: 65,000,000 BC (accessible via a new portal after the Dream Devourer).
  • Overview: This quest involves traveling between 65,000,000 BC and 1000 AD, completing tasks for the Reptites and Humans, and uncovering the history of the area.
  • Key Tasks & Rewards:
    • Bridge Construction: Help the Reptites and Humans build a bridge. This involves gathering materials and fending off monsters.
    • Monster Hunts: Defeat various powerful monsters across both eras to earn rewards.
    • Elder's Requests: Complete specific tasks for the elders of both communities.
    • Ultimate Weapons & Armor: The Lost Sanctum offers some of the best equipment in the game, including the Dragon's Tear (for Marle), Apocalypse Arm (for Robo), and the Prism Dress.
    • New Character: Completing the entire Lost Sanctum storyline unlocks a new playable character, adding another dimension to your party options.
  • Strategy: The Lost Sanctum is a long and involved quest. Be prepared for numerous battles and a lot of backtracking. Prioritize completing the main objectives to progress the story and unlock new areas and rewards.

New Game+ and Multiple Endings

Chrono Trigger is famous for its multiple endings, many of which can only be achieved by defeating Lavos at specific points in the story, often facilitated by New Game+.

  • New Game+: After completing the game, you can start a New Game+ save file. This allows you to carry over your character levels, equipment, Techs, and most items. This significantly reduces the early-game grind and lets you experiment with different party compositions and strategies.
  • Unlocking Endings:
    • Early Lavos Fights: With your powered-up New Game+ party, you can challenge Lavos much earlier in the story (e.g., immediately after reaching the End of Time, or even after rescuing Marle from the Middle Ages).
    • Specific Story Choices: Some endings are influenced by choices made during the main story, such as whether you recruit Magus or not.
  • Recommendation: Play through New Game+ multiple times to experience all 10+ endings. Each ending offers a unique glimpse into the future of Chrono's world and its inhabitants.
