The location of your capital city is paramount. Aim for a spot with a good balance of Food and Production tiles, ideally with access to a strategic resource within its initial borders. Look for tiles with high yields, such as those adjacent to rivers or forests. Consider the terrain; hills provide production, while flatlands are good for food. Avoid settling directly in Miasma, as it will negatively impact your city's Health. If possible, settle near a resource like Firaxite or Titanium, even if you can't immediately exploit it. This foresight will pay dividends in the mid to late game when these resources become essential for advanced units and buildings. Remember, you can always move your initial settler one tile before founding if a better spot is nearby.
