Difficulty Settings

CloverPit offers a range of difficulty settings to cater to every adventurer, from the casual explorer to the seasoned veteran seeking the ultimate challenge. Understanding these settings and how they impact your journey through the mystical lands is crucial for a fulfilling experience. You can adjust the difficulty at any time from the Main Menu under "Game Options" > "Gameplay" > "Difficulty."

Storyteller Mode (Easy)

This mode is ideal for players who want to immerse themselves in the rich narrative and explore the world without significant combat pressure. It's perfect for those new to adventure games or who prefer a more relaxed pace.

  • Enemy Health & Damage: Enemies like the Gloom Hounds in the Whispering Woods or the Sky-Serpents in the Azure Peaks will have 50% less health and deal 40% less damage. This makes encounters much more manageable.
  • Resource Abundance: You'll find a greater quantity of healing items such as Crimson Clover Potions and Mana Dew Vials in chests and dropped by defeated foes. Merchants in settlements like Oakhaven will also stock these at reduced prices.
  • Puzzle Assistance: The game provides more explicit hints for complex puzzles, such as those found in the Sunken Catacombs or the Gnomish Bomb Defusal mini-game. Look for glowing runes or audible cues.
  • Revival Tokens: You start with 5 Phoenix Feathers, which automatically revive you upon defeat, allowing you to continue your adventure without reloading.

Adventurer Mode (Normal)

This is the recommended setting for most players, offering a balanced experience that combines engaging combat with a compelling story. It provides a fair challenge without being overly punishing.

  • Enemy Health & Damage: Standard enemy health and damage. Expect a moderate challenge from creatures like the Bog Lurkers in the Sunken Swamps and the Crimson Blade bandits patrolling the Crossroads.
  • Resource Availability: Healing items and crafting materials are found at a balanced rate. You'll need to manage your inventory and consider crafting Basic Health Tonics at an Alchemy Station regularly.
  • Puzzle Hints: Subtle hints are provided for puzzles. You might need to examine the environment more closely or consult your Journal of Lore for clues.
  • Revival Tokens: You start with 2 Phoenix Feathers. Use them wisely!

Heroic Mode (Hard)

For players seeking a significant challenge, Heroic Mode ramps up the difficulty considerably. Combat encounters require strategic thinking, precise execution, and a deep understanding of your character's abilities. This mode is a true test of your mastery over CloverPit's mechanics and your ability to adapt to unforgiving circumstances.

  • Enemy Health & Damage: Enemies have 75% more health and deal 60% more damage. Even common foes like the Shadow Weavers grunts can be deadly if underestimated. Bosses, such as the Ancient Wyrm Ignis in the Dragon's Maw Arena, will require meticulous preparation, understanding of their attack patterns, and optimal gear.
  • Resource Scarcity: Healing items and crafting components are much rarer. You'll need to actively seek out hidden stashes and prioritize efficient use of your resources. Consider investing in the Scavenger's Satchel from the Wandering Merchant for increased loot drops, and always loot every defeated enemy. Crafting becomes paramount, so ensure you're gathering all available herbs and minerals.
  • Puzzle Complexity: Hints are minimal or non-existent. You'll need to rely on your wits and keen observation to solve the intricate riddles of the Whispering Labyrinth and other ancient ruins. Pay close attention to environmental details, decipher ancient texts, and experiment with mechanisms.
  • Revival Tokens: You start with 0 Phoenix Feathers. Death means reloading from your last save. This emphasizes the importance of strategic combat and avoiding unnecessary risks.
  • Aggressive AI: Enemies exhibit more advanced tactics, frequently employing flanking maneuvers, coordinating attacks, and prioritizing targeting weaker party members or characters with low health. Expect enemies to use their special abilities more often and with greater precision.
  • Environmental Hazards: Environmental dangers, such as poison gas vents in the Fungal Caves or crumbling platforms in the Sky-Shattered Citadel, deal increased damage or have more severe effects, making careful positioning crucial.
  • Limited Fast Travel: Fast travel points are fewer and farther between, encouraging more exploration and making resource management over long journeys more critical. Plan your routes carefully to avoid running out of supplies.

Legendary Mode (Extreme)

This is the ultimate test of skill and perseverance, designed for only the most dedicated adventurers. Legendary Mode pushes every aspect of the game to its limits, demanding flawless execution and mastery of all game mechanics. Only those who have truly mastered CloverPit will survive.

  • Enemy Health & Damage: Enemies have 150% more health and deal 100% more damage. Even the smallest Glimmerflies in the tutorial area can one-shot you if you're not careful. Every encounter is a life-or-death struggle.
  • Resource Scarcity: Resources are exceedingly rare. Every Crimson Clover Potion found is a treasure. Crafting is essential, and you'll need to explore every nook and cranny for materials. Merchants will have significantly reduced stock, and prices will be inflated. Efficient inventory management and resource allocation are critical for survival.
  • No Puzzle Hints: Absolutely no assistance for puzzles. Prepare for extensive trial and error or external guides (though we recommend trying without!). Solutions often require deep understanding of lore and environmental storytelling.
  • Permadeath Option: An optional "Ironman" mode is available, where death means the end of your save file. This can be toggled in the difficulty menu before starting a new game. This option is for the truly masochistic and offers the ultimate bragging rights.
  • Unique Enemy Abilities: Certain elite enemies and bosses gain new, devastating abilities not seen on lower difficulties. For example, the Clockwork Sentinel in the Clockwork Citadel gains a devastating area-of-effect attack that applies a permanent "Rust" debuff, significantly reducing armor. The Whisperwind Harpies in the Azure Peaks can now summon additional elemental allies.
  • Limited Saves: You can only save at designated Sanctuary Shrines, which are few and far between. These shrines are often guarded by powerful enemies or located at the end of challenging sequences, forcing players to commit to long stretches of gameplay without a safety net.
  • No UI Assists: Combat UI elements such as enemy health bars, damage numbers, and critical hit indicators are disabled, requiring players to rely purely on visual cues and sound design to gauge combat effectiveness.
  • Increased Debuff Potency: Status effects applied by enemies (e.g., Poison, Bleed, Stun, Curse) last longer and deal significantly more damage or have more severe penalties, making cleansing potions and abilities invaluable.
  • Aggressive Patrols: Enemy patrol routes are expanded, and spawn rates are increased, making safe passage through areas much more difficult. Ambushes are more frequent and deadlier.
