Mission 2: The Desert Fox's Trap
Welcome to "The Desert Fox's Trap," a pivotal mission that plunges you into the heart of North African vehicle warfare. This guide will equip you with the knowledge and strategies to outmaneuver Rommel's Afrika Korps and secure victory. Expect a significant step up in tactical complexity, with a strong emphasis on combined arms and effective anti-tank deployment.
Mission Objectives Overview
- Primary Objective 1: Establish a Forward Operating Base (FOB) at the Oasis.
- Primary Objective 2: Destroy the German Fuel Depot.
- Primary Objective 3: Repel the German Counter-Attack.
- Bonus Objective: Capture and hold the Observation Post.
Recommended Unit Composition & Loadout
For this mission, a balanced force is crucial. Prioritize anti-tank capabilities while maintaining infantry support and reconnaissance.
- Starting Units:
- 1x M3 Half-track (Transport/Light Support)
- 2x Riflemen Squads (Standard Infantry, AT Grenades unlockable)
- 1x M3 Gun Motor Carriage (M3 GMC - Primary Anti-Tank)
- Early Reinforcements (Prioritize):
- M3 GMC: Your workhorse anti-tank unit. Its 75mm gun is effective against early Panzers.
- Riflemen Squads: Essential for spotting, capturing points, and protecting vehicles from close-range threats. Upgrade with AT grenades when available.
- Mid-Mission Reinforcements (Consider):
- M5 Stuart Light Tank: Provides mobile fire support against infantry and light vehicles, and can flank heavier tanks.
- Mortar Team: Excellent for suppressing enemy infantry and dislodging entrenched positions.
Phase 1: Establishing the FOB at the Oasis
Your mission begins with your small detachment pushing towards a vital oasis, which will serve as your Forward Operating Base (FOB).
- Advance to the Oasis: Move your M3 Half-track and Riflemen squads along the main road. Keep your M3 GMC slightly behind, ready to engage.
- Initial Enemy Contact: You will encounter light German infantry (Grenadiers) and a Pz.Kpfw. II light tank defending the approach.
- Strategy: Use your Riflemen to spot the Pz.Kpfw. II. Position your M3 GMC in cover (e.g., behind rocks or a ridge) and engage the tank. Use your Riflemen to suppress the Grenadiers or flank them with the Half-track's machine gun.
- Common Pitfall: Rushing the Pz.Kpfw. II with your M3 GMC without infantry support. The tank can quickly disable your GMC if it gets too close or if its flank is exposed.
- Secure the Oasis: Once the initial resistance is cleared, move your units into the designated capture zone at the Oasis. This will establish your FOB, allowing you to call in reinforcements and resupply.
Phase 2: Destroying the German Fuel Depot
With your FOB established, your next objective is to cripple German logistics by destroying their nearby fuel depot. This phase will introduce heavier German armor.
- Scout the Route: Before advancing, send one Rifleman squad ahead to scout the path towards the Fuel Depot. The terrain is open, but there are several ambush points.
- Encountering German Armor: You will face a mix of Grenadiers, MG42 Heavy Machine Gun teams, and at least one Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. J medium tank defending the approaches.
- Strategy: This is where your M3 GMC shines. Keep it protected and use its range. Flank the Pz.Kpfw. III if possible; its side armor is weaker. Use your Riflemen to suppress the MG42s and clear out Grenadiers. Consider calling in an additional M3 GMC or an M5 Stuart if you have the resources.
- Tactical Tip: Utilize the sparse cover available (rock formations, small dunes) to break line of sight and protect your vehicles.
- Locate and Destroy the Fuel Depot: The Fuel Depot consists of several large fuel tanks. Once you've cleared the immediate defenses, target these structures with your vehicle fire.
- Reward: Destroying the Fuel Depot will grant you a significant resource bonus and unlock access to more advanced vehicle reinforcements.
Phase 3: Repelling the German Counter-Attack
Destroying the Fuel Depot will provoke a swift and aggressive German counter-attack. This is the most challenging part of the mission, featuring multiple armored units.
- Prepare Defenses: Immediately after destroying the Fuel Depot, consolidate your forces back towards your FOB or a defensible position.
- Key Positions: Look for elevated ground or chokepoints that offer good fields of fire for your M3 GMCs.
- Reinforce: Spend your accumulated resources on additional M3 GMCs or an M5 Stuart. Consider a Mortar Team for area denial.
- The Counter-Attack Wave: The Germans will attack with a force comprising:
- 2-3x Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. J (Medium Tanks)
- 1x Stug III Ausf. G (Assault Gun - high frontal armor, limited traverse)
- Multiple Grenadier Squads (some with Panzerschrecks)
- 1-2x MG42 Heavy Machine Gun Teams
- Engaging the Enemy:
- Prioritize Panzers: Focus all anti-tank fire on the Pz.Kpfw. III and Stug III. Target the Stug's sides if you can flank it, as its frontal armor is formidable.
- Infantry Support: Use your Riflemen to screen your vehicles, spot enemy Panzerschreck teams, and engage Grenadiers. Flank MG42 positions with your Half-track or a Rifleman squad.
- Kiting & Retreat: If your vehicles take heavy damage, don't be afraid to retreat them to your FOB for repairs. Use your infantry to hold ground or delay the enemy.
- Bonus Objective - Capture Observation Post: During the counter-attack, a small Observation Post will become available for capture. Securing this will grant you vision over a large portion of the map, providing invaluable intel on enemy movements. Send a fast Rifleman squad to capture it while your main force holds the line.
- Hold the Line: The counter-attack will be relentless. Maintain your defensive positions, repair damaged vehicles, and call in reinforcements as needed. Once all enemy units are destroyed, the mission will conclude.
