Enemies & Bestiary
Welcome, Core Keeper! The underground world is teeming with creatures, some friendly, most decidedly not. Understanding your foes is paramount to survival and successful exploration. This section will detail the common inhabitants of the various biomes, their attack patterns, drops, and the best strategies to overcome them.
The Dirt Biome: Early Game Encounters
Your journey begins in the relatively docile Dirt Biome, but don't let its initial calm fool you. Even the smallest creatures can pose a threat if underestimated.
Larva
- Location: Abundant throughout the Dirt Biome, often found near walls or emerging from Larva Hives.
- Attack Pattern: Simple melee attack. They will slowly crawl towards you and bump into you for damage.
- Strategy:
- Melee: A basic Copper Sword or Tin Sword will dispatch them quickly. Keep moving to avoid being swarmed.
- Ranged: A Slingshot with Stone Slingshot Ammo is effective for kiting groups.
- Exploration Tip: Destroy Larva Hives (found embedded in walls) to prevent more from spawning. Use a pickaxe or explosives like Bomb for quick clearance.
- Drops: Larva Meat (used for cooking simple meals like Cooked Larva for health regeneration) and occasionally Larva Spike (crafting material).
Giant Larva
- Location: Less common than regular Larva, often found deeper within the Dirt Biome or guarding valuable resources.
- Attack Pattern: Similar to regular Larva but with higher damage and health. They also have a slightly wider attack radius.
- Strategy:
- Melee: Engage with a Tin Sword or better. Focus on dodging their slow attacks and retaliating. Consider crafting a Wooden Shield for early damage reduction.
- Ranged: The Slingshot remains viable, but you'll need more Stone Slingshot Ammo due to their increased health. Maintain distance.
- Environmental Advantage: Lure them into narrow corridors where you can attack them one-on-one, or use natural obstacles to your advantage.
- Drops: More Larva Meat, Larva Spike, and sometimes Small Larva Goo (a crafting component for early-game items).
The Clay Caves: A Step Up in Challenge
As you venture into the Clay Caves, the enemies become more aggressive and introduce new mechanics. Be prepared with upgraded gear.
Caveling
- Location: Ubiquitous in the Clay Caves, often found in groups or patrolling excavated areas.
- Attack Pattern: Melee attackers that move faster than Larva. They can also throw a basic projectile (a small rock) from a short distance if you try to kite them.
- Strategy:
- Melee: A Copper Pickaxe or Tin Pickaxe can serve as a decent weapon, but a dedicated Tin Sword or Iron Sword is recommended. Prioritize taking out ranged Cavelings first.
- Ranged: The Slingshot is still useful, but consider upgrading to a Wooden Bow with Wooden Arrows for better damage and range.
- Group Management: Avoid being surrounded. Use your pickaxe to create choke points or temporary walls to funnel them.
- Drops: Caveling Horn (crafting material for early tools and armor), Caveling Meat (cooking ingredient).
Caveling Brute
- Location: Less common than regular Cavelings, often found guarding valuable Tin Ore or Iron Ore deposits.
- Attack Pattern: Slow but powerful melee attacks. They have significantly more health and can knock you back.
- Strategy:
- Melee: Requires careful dodging. Attack once or twice, then retreat to avoid their heavy swings. An Iron Sword is highly recommended. Consider wearing Tin Armor for better defense.
- Ranged: A Wooden Bow is effective for chipping away at their health from a safe distance. Stock up on Wooden Arrows.
- Traps: If you have access to Spike Traps (crafted from wood and spikes), placing a few in their path can soften them up before direct engagement.
- Drops: Caveling Horn, Caveling Meat, and occasionally Large Caveling Goo (a more potent crafting component).
Boss Encounters: The Core Guardians
These formidable foes require specific preparation and understanding of their mechanics. They are often tied to progression and unlocking new areas or technologies.
Ghorm the Devourer (First Boss)
- Location: Found in the Azeos' Wilderness biome, typically in a large, open area. You'll need to activate the Ghorm's Horn item at a specific altar to summon him.
- Attack Pattern: Ghorm is a massive worm-like creature that tunnels through the ground, leaving a trail of acid. He will periodically surface to charge at you.
- Strategy:
- Preparation:
- Gear: Aim for full Iron Armor and an Iron Sword or Iron Bow.
- Consumables: Bring plenty of healing items like Heart Berries or Cooked Meals. Speed Potions can be invaluable for dodging.
- Arena Prep: Clear the area of obstacles. Consider placing Spike Traps along his predicted path to deal passive damage. Crafting a few Bridges can help you cross acid trails quickly.
- Combat Phases:
- Tunneling Phase: Ghorm will burrow, leaving a damaging acid trail. Stay out of the acid and anticipate where he will surface.
- Charge Phase: When Ghorm surfaces, he will charge in a straight line. Dodge to the side. This is your primary window to attack his head or tail.
- Key Tactic: The most effective strategy is to stay mobile. Use ranged attacks with your Iron Bow during his tunneling phase, and switch to melee with your Iron Sword to hit his head or tail when he charges past you. Don't stand in the acid!
- Preparation:
- Drops: Ghorm's Horn (used to summon him again), Ghorm's Scale (a vital crafting material for powerful armor and tools), and a large amount of Ancient Coin.
