Hero Portal Door

The Hero Portal Door is a crucial, albeit often frustrating, element in your Core Keeper experience. Unlike the friendly portals that transport you between biomes, this particular portal serves as a gateway for the game's various Hero units to invade your dungeon. Understanding how to manage and counter these incursions is vital for your long-term survival and progress.

Understanding Hero Incursions

Heroes are hostile NPCs that will periodically spawn from the Hero Portal Door and attempt to destroy your Core. They come in various types, each with unique abilities and threat levels. The frequency and strength of these incursions generally increase as you progress through the game and defeat more bosses.

Types of Heroes

  • Warrior: Basic melee units, often equipped with swords and shields. They are the most common type and serve as the frontline of most incursions.
  • Ranger: Ranged units that attack from a distance with bows. Prioritize eliminating them to reduce sustained damage to your structures and creatures.
  • Mage: Spellcasters who can deal significant elemental damage or apply debuffs. Their attacks often pierce through multiple targets or have area-of-effect properties.
  • Healer: Support units that can restore health to other Heroes. These are high-priority targets, as they can prolong battles significantly.
  • Bombardier: These Heroes carry explosives and will attempt to detonate them near your Core or other vital structures. Extremely dangerous if left unchecked.

Preparing Your Defenses

Effective defense against Hero incursions requires careful planning and strategic placement of traps, walls, and your own creatures.

Strategic Placement

The Hero Portal Door will always spawn Heroes in a fixed location within your dungeon. Identify this location early and begin fortifying it. Consider the following:

  • Chokepoints: Create narrow passages leading from the portal. This forces Heroes to funnel into a smaller area, making them easier to control and damage.
  • Layered Defenses: Don't rely on a single line of defense. Build multiple layers of walls, traps, and creature housing to absorb damage and slow down the advance.
  • Visibility: Ensure your ranged creatures and traps have clear lines of sight to the portal entrance and the chokepoints.

Essential Defensive Structures & Items

  • Walls:
    • Stone Walls: Basic and readily available. Good for early game.
    • Reinforced Walls: Stronger and more durable, ideal for high-traffic areas. Crafted from Iron Bars and Stone.
    • Obsidian Walls: The strongest walls available, offering maximum protection. Requires Obsidian and a Smelter.
  • Traps:
    • Spike Traps: Deal continuous damage to Heroes standing on them. Place them heavily in chokepoints. Crafted from Wood and Copper Bars.
    • Explosive Traps: Deal high burst damage in an area. Excellent for clearing groups of Heroes. Requires Bomb Caps and Iron Bars.
    • Dart Traps: Ranged traps that fire projectiles. Place them behind walls or in elevated positions for sustained damage. Crafted from Wood and Tin Bars.
  • Creature Housing:
    • Build rooms like the Barracks to attract and house combat-oriented creatures such as Slimes (green, blue, purple) or Larva. Ensure they are well-fed to maintain their combat effectiveness.
    • Consider placing Glow-Shrooms or Heart Berries near your creature housing to provide passive healing or buffs.
  • Turrets: Advanced defensive structures that automatically attack approaching enemies.
    • Basic Turret: Fires projectiles. Requires Iron Bars and Mechanical Parts.
    • Flame Turret: Deals fire damage in a cone. Excellent for crowd control. Requires Iron Bars, Mechanical Parts, and Torch Bugs.

During an Incursion

When the alarm sounds and Heroes begin pouring from the portal, quick and decisive action is key.

  1. Prioritize Targets: Focus fire on high-threat Heroes first.
    • Healers: Eliminate them immediately to prevent them from extending the fight.
    • Bombardiers: Their explosive attacks can devastate your defenses. Take them out before they reach your key structures.
    • Mages & Rangers: Reduce ranged damage output by dispatching these threats.
  2. Utilize Potions & Food: Don't be stingy with your consumables.
    • Healing Potions: Keep your character alive and fighting.
    • Buff Foods: Consume meals that provide combat bonuses like increased damage or defense. Examples include Hearty Stir Fry (HP regen) or Spicy Stir Fry (damage boost).
  3. Repair Damaged Structures: Keep an eye on your walls and traps. Use your Repair Tool to mend any damaged defenses during lulls in the fighting or after the wave.
  4. Retreat if Overwhelmed: If the Heroes are too strong, don't be afraid to fall back to a more fortified position. Lure them into pre-placed traps or towards your strongest creatures.

Post-Incursion Cleanup

After successfully repelling an incursion, take these steps to prepare for the next one:

  • Collect Loot: Heroes often drop valuable items, including Ancient Coins, Heroic Equipment, and crafting materials.
  • Repair & Replace: Fully repair all damaged walls and traps. Replace any destroyed traps.
  • Restock Resources: Ensure you have enough crafting materials for future repairs and trap replacements.
  • Evaluate & Improve: Analyze your defenses. Did any area perform poorly? Were there any weak points? Adjust your strategy and build new defenses accordingly.

Mastering the Hero Portal Door is a continuous process of adaptation and improvement. By understanding the threats, preparing thoroughly, and reacting effectively, you'll ensure your Core remains safe and your dungeon thrives.
