Selecting the right guardian for your children is a critical decision in Crusader Kings III, directly impacting their future development and the traits they acquire. A good guardian can significantly boost your heir's skills and personality, setting them up for a successful re or a valuable role within your dynasty.

Key Considerations for Guardian Selection

  • Skill Level: The most important factor is the guardian's skill in the chosen education path. If you want your child to have a strong Martial education, choose a guardian with a high Martial skill. The higher the guardian's skill, the better the education outcome will be, leading to higher skill gains and a greater chance of acquiring positive education traits.
  • Education Traits: Look for guardians who already possess positive education traits in the relevant skill. A guardian with the "Skilled" Martial education trait will be far more effective at teaching Martial skills than one without.
  • Personality Traits: While less impactful on raw skill, a guardian's personality traits can influence the child's development. A guardian with "Just" or "Honest" might instill similar values in your child, while a "Deceitful" guardian could lead to a more cunning heir. Consider what personality traits you wish to encourage.
  • Vassal vs. Courtier: You can select guardians from your own court or from the wider realm (if they are your vassal or you have a high opinion of them). Vassals can be excellent guardians, but ensure they are loyal and won't abscond with your child.
  • Availability: Not all characters are suitable guardians. They must be of the same faith and culture as the child (or have a tolerance for differences), and they cannot be too young or too old.

Assigning a Guardian

When your child reaches the age of 6, you will receive a notification prompting you to ass a guardian. Navigate to the child's character sheet and look for the "Education" section. Here, you can see the current guardian (if any) and the chosen education focus. Click on the guardian's portrait to open the guardian selection screen.

The screen will display a list of potential guardians, sorted by their suitability. Pay close attention to the guardian's skill level and any relevant education traits. You can also see their personality traits and general opinion of you.

Strategic Guardian Choices

  • Heir's Education: For your primary heir, prioritize guardians with the highest possible skill and the best education traits in the desired path. This is your best chance to create a truly exceptional ruler.
  • Other Children: For younger siblings or children not destined to inherit, you might opt for guardians who can impart useful secondary skills or positive personality traits. A child with high Intrigue might be useful for your court, even if they aren't the heir.
  • Alliance Building: Sometimes, assigning a child to be educated by a powerful fore ruler can foster good relations and potentially lead to an alliance.

Remember that guardians can be changed, but it's best to set your child on the right path from the start. A well-chosen guardian is an investment in your dynasty's future.
