After defeating the formidable Guardian Dragon in Aldia's Keep, you'll gain access to a unique mode of transportation: a friendly, albeit enormous, dragon. This majestic creature will carry you directly to the Dragon Aerie, a perilous but rewarding area crucial for advancing your journey.
Preparing for the Flight
Before you embark on this aerial journey, ensure you are well-prepared. The Dragon Aerie is teeming with dangerous foes and environmental hazards. Consider the following:
- Stock up on healing items: Estus Flasks, Lifegems, and Radiant Lifegems are essential.
- Repair your equipment: The enemies here hit hard, and you don't want your gear breaking mid-fight.
- Consider ranged options: Many enemies in the Aerie can be safely dealt with from a distance. Bows, crossbows, and spells are highly recommended.
- Attune useful spells: Spells like Great Magic Barrier or Sacred Oath can provide significant defensive or offensive buffs.
The Dragon Ride and Initial Landing
Once you interact with the dragon after the Guardian Dragon boss fight, a cinematic will play, showing your character being carried through the skies. There's no interaction required during this sequence; simply enjoy the view of Drangleic from above.
You will be deposited directly onto a platform within the Dragon Aerie. Immediately upon landing, take a moment to survey your surroundings. There's a bonfire nearby, which you should light and rest at without delay. This will serve as your primary respawn point for this challenging area.
Initial Exploration and Hazards
The Dragon Aerie is characterized by narrow ledges, precarious bridges, and, as the name suggests, numerous dragons. These dragons are not passive; they will actively attack you with fire breath if you get too close or linger in their line of sight. Their attacks can be devastating, often knocking you off ledges to your death.
- Dragon Placement: Observe the dragons' patrol patterns. Some are stationary, while others fly in predictable routes.
- Environmental Awareness: The primary danger here is falling. Always be mindful of your footing, especially when engaging enemies.
- First Encounter: As you proceed from the bonfire, you'll likely encounter your first Dragon Knight enemies. These humanoids are agile and wield powerful weapons. They can be parried and backstabbed, but their attacks are swift.
- Item Collection: Keep an eye out for glowing item pickups. The Dragon Aerie holds valuable treasures, including Dragon Bones and Titanite Slabs, crucial for upgrading your gear.
Navigating the Bridges
A significant portion of the Dragon Aerie involves crossing rickety rope bridges. These bridges are often guarded by Dragon Knights or are within the attack range of the larger dragons. Here's how to approach them:
- Observe Dragon Patrols: Before stepping onto a bridge, watch the dragons. Time your crossing to avoid their fire breath.
- Deal with Dragon Knights: Engage any Dragon Knights on the bridge carefully. Their attacks can stagger you, potentially leading to a fall. Consider luring them off the bridge to safer ground if possible.
- Ranged Tactics: If a dragon is persistently harassing a bridge, consider using a bow or spells to draw its attention or even defeat it from a safe distance. Be warned, however, that killing a dragon will not prevent others from appearing.
- Patience is Key: Rushing across these bridges is a recipe for disaster. Take your time, observe, and move deliberately.
