Welcome to The Ringed City, the final downloadable content for Dark Souls III. This guide will help you navigate its treacherous paths, overcome its formidable foes, and uncover its secrets. Before diving into the new areas, it's essential to have a solid understanding of the game's core mechanics, especially if you're returning after a break or are new to the Souls series.
Accessing The Ringed City
To access The Ringed City, you must have defeated the final boss of the main Dark Souls III game, the Soul of Cinder. After his defeat, you will be transported to the Kiln of the First Flame. Within this area, you will find a bonfire and a new item, the "Dark Soul of Londor." Interacting with this item will transport you to the beginning of The Ringed City.
Core Combat Mechanics Refresher
- Stamina Management: Every action you take—attacking, dodging, blocking, sprinting—consumes stamina. Running out of stamina leaves you vulnerable. Always be aware of your stamina bar and ensure you have enough for a defensive maneuver.
- Dodging (Rolling): Rolling is your primary defensive tool. Timing your rolls correctly allows you to evade most attacks. Rolling direction is crucial; often, rolling into an attack is more effective than rolling away. Your equip load affects your roll speed and distance. Aim for under 70% equip load for a medium roll.
- Parrying: A well-timed parry can stagger enemies, opening them up for a critical riposte. This requires precise timing and understanding of enemy attack animations.
- Blocking: Shields are useful for blocking attacks, but they consume stamina. Blocking heavy attacks can break your guard, leaving you staggered.
- Weapon Arts: Most weapons in Dark Souls III have unique Weapon Arts, activated by pressing L2/LT. These can range from special attacks to buffs or defensive maneuvers. Experiment with your chosen weapon's Weapon Art.
Bonfires and Estus Flasks
Bonfires serve as checkpoints where you can rest, replenish your Estus Flasks (health and FP recovery items), and level up. Resting at a bonfire respawns most enemies in the area. Estus Flasks can be upgraded with Estus Shards and their potency increased with Undead Bone Shards found throughout the world.
Understanding Your Stats
Your character's stats (Vigor, Attunement, Endurance, Vitality, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, Luck) directly influence your combat effectiveness. Vigor increases HP, Endurance increases stamina, Strength and Dexterity affect physical damage, and Intelligence and Faith boost spellcasting power. Understanding how your stats synergize with your chosen build is paramount for success.
Navigating the Environment
The Ringed City is known for its intricate level des, hidden paths, and environmental hazards. Always be observant of your surroundings. Look for illusory walls, hidden levers, and potential traps. Sound cues can also be important indicators of nearby enemies or dangers.
