Efficiently navigating the treacherous combat of Dark Souls 3 requires a firm grasp of its core movement and action mechanics. These abilities are your primary tools for survival and offense:

  • Dashing: By pushing the left analog stick in a direction and holding the 'B' (Xbox) or 'O' (PlayStation) button, your character performs a quick dash. Dashing consumes stamina and is crucial for closing distances or evading attacks.
  • Jumping: While dashing, pressing down on the left analog stick (L3) will cause your character to jump in the direction of the dash. This can be used to traverse small gaps or avoid low-hitting attacks.
  • Rolling: Pressing the 'B'/'O' button without directional input performs a roll. Rolls grant invincibility frames (i-frames) at the start of the animation, allowing you to pass through attacks unharmed if timed correctly. Rolling while getting up from a knockdown also provides i-frames, though with a shorter distance.
  • Backstep: Pressing the 'B'/'O' button while not pushing the left analog stick results in a quick backward step. Unlike rolls, backsteps do not have i-frames and are primarily for minor repositioning.
